Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

I'm surprised that galvanized steel corrodes like that. It seems like they were already taking a precaution in using galvanized steel rather than regular steel, but hopefully this will not be a terribly expensive recall - although it's almost a million trucks, it seems like tailgate cables shouldn't be too expensive, especially in bulk (let's see, they need about 1.8 million of them if each tailgate gets two...).

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

Man, GM just doesn't make since sometimes

The tailgate straps on my 1995 Silverado never stapped, corroded, or anything. Its a friggin strap...why did they change the design for the 800s? Does the new one aid in gas mileage?--no. Don't change immovable parts that people never notice, especially if there was nothing wrong with the origional design.

Its like the weatherstripping issues on the Trailblazer- or the Firestone tire issue. GM has been making weatherstripping since they have been making cars with roofs! Firestone has been making tires since their company started- how can they screw up so badly on a part that doesn't have moving parts or need significant updates...ever.

A recall on a faulty electrical component, or a bad batch of injectors, or something makes since. These don't.

Remember the 1999-2000 MY 800s with the bad brakes? Brakes are designed and installed on every car in the country- they should not have that many problems with them. For a company that makes a million trucks a year, they should not need a huge learning curve. They knew about those problems, and by the time they changed the design and fixed the issue, it was 3 model years later and they had knowingly sold over a million trucks. They need to react quicker than that.

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

I had mine replaced about 4 months ago. I think about it each time I stand at the end of the tailgate and jump up and down.

I had mine replaced on our 2001 Silverado quite a while ago. Funny thing is, the new parts have a tag that says "China" on them. Guess the US ones weren't strong enough, so they had to get China to build a better one.

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

I could be wrong, but I think the new ones are stainless steel.

I am going to Bristol for a Nascar Moment. Hopefully not breaking the straps on my tailgate.

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

When engineering a cable that is basically outside the vehicle, wouldn't the engineers figure out that these would corrode? Even with a plastic coating, they must realize that this would not protect the metal forever.

Is this an acceptible engineering failure? My guess is that this sort of thing should never have been approved for production.
