GM Recalls 90,000 Vehicles

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...711200301/1014

General Motors Corp. recalled 69,000 Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac pickups and SUVs and more than 20,000 Saturn cars for repairs including adding interior safety foam and fixing a timing chain.

The recall by the world's largest automaker covers 57,100 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent SUVs from the 2007 model year, and 11,974 2001-model Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and 20,514 Saturn L-Series cars, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site.

Pretty low numbers considering the different vehicles involved. That's a relief!

Re: GM Recalls 90,000 Vehicles

Honestly, it seems like its been forever since we have seen one of these. While this is not the greatest news, it reminds us how long we have come. It seems like it was every other week there was another recall. But that time is long past.

The chain must be on the Saturn.
I wonder what "safety foam" is?

Re: GM Recalls 90,000 Vehicles

I recieved one of these a few months back for my Cobalt. It still hasn't made it to the dealer yet. But they are adding an extra piece of foam to the edge of the headliner. It is where the headliner meets the windshield. Apparently there isn't enought material there to absorb an impact if you where hit. Not a real big deal if you ask me.

Now I'm not Toyota fan by any means, but it seems like if this news was about them rather than GM, people here wouldn't be saying "no big deal" or "pretty low numbers considering the number of vehicles involved", they would be celebrating.

You're damned right. Toyota's gotten free ride for too long. And you have to remember, this is a perdominantly GM fan site. So I'll say it loud so you can hear it;
DUH!

Ahh yes you are correct sir. You wanna know why? Because 90,000 recalls for Toyota right now wouldn't be only 90,000 for the year, it would be 'yet another recall from Toyota' or ' Toyota just keeps calling them back.' This is, from what I can remember, GM's first recall of 2007; definately not like Toyota's, what, 20th? Let me remind you it is November and GM has issued a recall for only 90,000 vehicles. 57,000 vehicles from 2007 compared to the over 3 million they have sold stateside this year. Where's Toyota at? If this was Toyota's first recall of 2007 we'd all be impressed.

It's to help protect people that don't wear safety belts when they hit the roof. It's like making the road surface engergy absorbent for helmetless motorcyclists. More help from the government to protect us from ourselves.

The real problem is that these new safety laws will effect vehicle design.

Re: GM Recalls 90,000 Vehicles

The recall for the foam seems just silly to me. The timing chain one isn't good though, makes me think of the problem the Cateras would have with jumping the timing belt, destroying the engines. I hated getting calls on those cars. The crankshaft position sensor seemed to be a common problem on the 8.1, most calls on the 8.1 were stalling because of that, another problem was oil consumption.

It could have been a lot worse. At least GM's camshafts are not failing.

Ummm... what's an 8.1? I don't recall the Catera having an 8.1L engine!!!

Um... ever rolled a vehicle with a low roofline? Your head hits the roof pretty hard, even if you're wearing a seatbelt. Trust me on that one
