GM recalls 553,000 SUVs, trucks for brakes.

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. said on Friday it is expanding an earlier recall of sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks to include another 553,000 vehicles because of potential problems with brakes.

Unwanted application of the anti-lock brake system in some vehicles can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed braking, GM spokesman Alan Adler said.

GM in August recalled 804,000 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs in 14 states for the same problem.

Adler said the recall is being expanded to include Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Vehicles affected by the recall include the Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado pickups and the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs. The GMC Sierra pickup and Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are also affected. All the vehicles are from the 1999-2002 model years

Brakes are not a good thing to have messup. Good thing the recall is in action.

Re: GM recalls 553,000 SUVs, trucks for brakes.

My 97 Firebird has this exact problem. I had to pull the relay out of the ABS because it almost made me wreck my car 3 times in 1 week. It also triggered when I lightly tapped the brakes on the freeway at 80mph but only on 1 set of wheels, I almost lost control of my car. I haven't gone to a dealer yet because I was told by someone who had this problem with a Camaro that the dealer charged them alot of money to scan his car and then told him there's nothing wrong with it.

Looks like I will be getting a recall notice soon, as I live in the states they now include, and have a '02 Suburban. By the way, we couldn't be happier with its braking. I am not effected, but will do the recall since I don't want to be effected!

Both our 1998 GMC Yukon and 1998 GMC Sierra have had this problem for years. Three years ago the service people at the dealer looked at us like we were stupid when we complained of the problem and said they had never heard of that before. I wish GM would expand the recall to older vehicles. I'm not going to pay the money that they want at the dealer for them to 'investigate' the problem. So we have also disconnected the ABS in both vehicles so we don't hit someone every time we try to stop.

804,000
+ 553,000
=1357,000

And still only 1/4 of the population, thats how not to make a recall look so bad! Just do bits at a time.

Re: GM recalls 553,000 SUVs, trucks for brakes.

I had this problem with my 2002 Avalanche. I failed my 2003 State inspection because of it. After a few friends drove my truck and **************** near hit something, I complained to my dealer, GM and the Autoline BBB. They basically told me I was nuts. It was quite scary.

Just so you know, the recall is due to corrosion on the wheel speed sensors
in areas that use road salts in the winter. You can experience this problem because of other issues as well, such as loose wheel hubs or wiring problems.
I'm not sure if there is a design flaw that caused this recall or if they are just doing it to avoid lawsuits, but if its a design flaw you can tell by the year ranges that this problem is not present in newer or older vehicles, otherwise the recall WOULD apply to those vehicles as well.

So basically ABS is broken. Pull the ABS fuse and then go back to pumping your brakes, until you get it fixed. Not a super huge issue.

Re: GM recalls 553,000 SUVs, trucks for brakes.

Thats sooooo, OLD, So does Many other car companies, Mercedes, BMW, etc. A lot of cars are having these problems in North east region of US and NorthWest, not to mention Toyota and Honda. It's just that the media expose GM to the Public, I own a shop in Central New York and I could keep going with all the cars with this problem.

Re: GM recalls 553,000 SUVs, trucks for brakes.

My dad has an 02 Silverado. It has 40k miles on it and is about to have it's first brake job. Never a problem. Nor have I heard of this problem from anyone else I know with these trucks.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm just saying its not as wide-spread as this is made out to be.

Dude, make SURE you see the worn out brake pads before they do a brake job, I have NEVER done a brake job on the GMT800 trucks suvs since they came out. I regulary get trucks in with 100k+ that still have at least 50% of the pad left.

[quote=griswold44]Give it a rest, Sobe.[/QUOTE
The brake problems usually result in warped rotors and drums, with some vehicles needing a brake job every 5 to 10 thousand miles. One client had 8 brake jobs in 110,000 miles. There are literally dozens of complaints of brake pulsation / vibration for Tundra trucks on the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration website. NHTSA is starting to receive similar complaints on Armadas and Titans.

haha, not a big issue? You can basically lose control of a car and probably kill yourself and or other people.
