GM recalling 944,000 vehicles

GM recalling 944,000 vehicles

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...1D24.DTL&tsp=1

General Motors Corp. said Friday it was recalling 944,000 vehicles because of a problem with a windshield wiper fluid system that could lead to a fire.

More than 850,000 sport utility vehicles, trucks and passenger cars in the United States and nearly 100,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and the Middle East are involved in the recall, the company said.

GM said it includes the 2008 Buick Enclave, 2006-2008 Buick Lucerne, 2006-2008 Cadillac DTS, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade EXT, 2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, 2007-2008 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL, 2006-2008 Hummer H2 and 2007-2008 Saturn Outlook.

The recall involves vehicles with a heated washer fluid system. A short circuit in the system could cause electrical features to malfunction, which could lead to an odor, smoke or potentially a fire.

GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said there have been nine reports of fires and three of them have been linked to the system. There have been no accidents or injuries connected to the defect, she said.

Windshield washer fluid is flammable, as I found out when I tried to use a bucket of it to put out a small fire Oh, being 15 was fun....

Shouldn't this just be a "safety campaign", ala Toyota and Honda?

So, I'll have to visit the dealer sooner than I thought. No biggee. I have to order winter tires anyway.

Re: GM recalling 944,000 vehicles

So every vehicle ever made with this system is recalled. Looks like THAT option wasn't worth offering!

Re: GM recalling 944,000 vehicles

Call me silly, but I would think the fire danger would be low, seeing how the fluid is right there to douse the "fire". And you'd think a fuse would blow before it got to that point anyway.

They would still have to fix it. You can't discount a car fire because the washer fluid *might* put it out.

lol, no that's not what I'm saying at all.....of course "fix it". I just thought the danger of a real fire would be low....but if the fluid is indeed flamable like another poster mentioned..........then where there's smoke, there's fire! Ohhhhhh burn! I am on fire!

Looks like mgescuro got beat by 1 minute!

it contains alcohol which is flammable so it does not freeze for us owners in the snow belt.

Debatable. The required fix is to replace a fuse in case of a short circuit. Doesn't necessarily have to do with quality.

Just wait till GM sends you a notification card! So the dealers can get parts ect. THis info goes public before dealerships can be ready. Making customers a pain in the axx.
