Engine Fires? Nissan Stops Sales of Altima, Sentra

Nissan stops sales of some Altimas, Sentras

Reuters / June 2, 2006 - 4:45 pm

DETROIT -- Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said on Friday it had asked its U.S. dealers to stop selling certain 2006 model-year Nissan Altima and Sentra SE-R cars due to reports of excessive oil consumption that could damage the engine or cause a fire.

About 100,000 Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built between January and May 2006 may have the problem, according to the company.

There have been about 215 reports of excessive oil consumption, mostly from rental-car fleets, and 17 reports of engine fires, resulting in one minor injury, Nissan said.

This is the latest setback for the Japanese automaker, which has cut U.S. production this year because of sales declines in the region. Nissan's U.S. sales are down 1.8 percent so far this year, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

Nissan said it had extended the engine portion of the vehicles' warranty on Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built during January to May 2006 to 84 months or 100,000 miles.

Re: Nissan Stops Sales Of Two Vehicles

I've seen two brand- new Altimas here in San Diego, CA that burned to the ground in the last month. People are staying away from them in droves!

Tough for Nissan. At least they bumped the warranty. Still would keep me from ever considering one. Not that I ever would anyways.

Re: Nissan Stops Sales Of Two Vehicles

Sounds like the QR25DE is having some problems. It isn't Nissan's best engine from what I've read and gathered through these past few years.

The Sentra SE-R and the i4 Altima share the same engine: QR25DE... which seems isn't that highly-regarded relative to other Nissan and Japanese mainstream i4s.

I think what goes on the frontpage ticker depends on which admin/mod sees the post first. "X" GMI staff may not see this as ticker-worthy but "Y" GMI staff may.

At this point, I'm willing for anybody and everybody to take a dip so that GM can get back on their feet. So if Nissan is hurting then good. That's one less Japanese manufacturer in the way

Re: Nissan Stops Sales Of Two Vehicles

Wow, this is not good for Nissan, the Sentra SE-R is one of there more popular cars, and I wonder if this includes the Spec V edition. As this was a very viable performance option to the Civics. This will definately hurt them

QR25DE means...

QR engine series
25 is 2.5L
D = DOHC
E = EFI

so a VG30DETT is

VG family
3.0L
DOHC
EFI
Twin Turbo

Nissan engines are easy to figure out.

Re: Nissan Stops Sales Of Two Vehicles

.......The only thing going for the altima were the clear tail lights , the big padded steering wheel and the chrome around the guages . It's amazing how many people bought one for the looks. The 4 banger in them was over rated (170 horses I'm guessing) the ride was poor and very noisey. It was also the first modern japanese car that came with a poor audio system....just terrible. A 4 cylinder cavaliar has a better ride.
