Cobalt safety recall

http://wlns.com/Global/story.asp?S=5984658

(article is very short, and thus I didn't cut it)

General Motors is recalling over 98,000 vehicles in an effort to upgrade head impact protection. The recall effects 2005 and 2006 models of their Chevrolet Cobalt Sedans. GM officials say they need to upgrade the models that aren't already equipped with the optional roof-mounted side-impact airbags. Owners with concerns can call Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

Re: Cobalt safety recall

wow, go figure. I was going to order that on my 07/08 SS Cobalt so I guess I should now huh?

I wonder what caused the report and recall and why the coupes are being called back?

There have been no injuries... It is because of the damage something up there causes when an UNBELTED occupant is involved in an accident.

Re: Cobalt safety recall

From the sounds of this, cars without the side airbags will be getting some sort of upgrade?

Re: Cobalt safety recall

It was only the 4 door with a horrible side crash rating I think. The 2 door was alright I think, that's why it's only the 4 door.

Unbelted????? Pfft, then you deserve to get hurt.....its not like the airbag could save you.... . I can't believe GM would have to spend money on such a thing...... I'd say leave it be and slap a sticker there "buckle up or your head will hit here"

I heard on the news this morning that Ford settled a 12M lawsuit for two men that were severely injured from not wearing a seatbeat when they were involved in a car crash. Maybe it was in reaction to this?? (or maybe they were forced to recall?)

It is to put extra padding around the winshield area. The idea is if someone doesn't buckle up in an accident, then the extra padding might help when they smash their heads against the windshield frame.

It is an upgrade more than a recall. It is only for the cars that were made without the upper air bags in 2005-06

There is something seriously wrong with this world when lawsuits like this happen.

If I'm not wearing a seatbelt and I get crippled for life, it's MY fault not anyone elses.

If it's in the vicinity of the roof rail or B-pillar, you could easily hit your head even if you were buckled up.

The Focus was recalled a few years ago because the A-pillar trim didn't have enough energy-absorbing foam behind it, or something along those lines.. This sounds like a similar issue.

Ah, yes. American safety regulation. Even people too stupid to wear a seat belt are to be protected, even if it means we harm some other people - as in, the original airbags that were powerful enough to protect an unbelted 95th percentile male. Who cares if smaller women and children get killed?

Why do we insist on idiot proofing everything? Can't we let Darwin have his way?

Do you all realize that in most states an automaker cannot introduce evidence that someone was unbelted? Yup. You cannot argue that someone was injured because he was too stupid to wear a seatbelt. You cannot even directly tell the jury that the idiot wasn't wearing his seatbelt.

By this, our state courts effectively ensure that the safety standard is one that protects unbelted idiots. And we all have to pay the cost of that.

Once again, let me ask: Can't we just let Darwin take his course with these people?

AGREED, 150% if you dont have your seatbelt on, you deserve to get whatever you get.

if i was ford, i'd say we design our vehicles around the use of the safety belt which is required by law.
