Autoblog: General Motors expands pickup and SUV recall by 553,000 units

General Motors expands pickup and SUV recall by 553,000 units

Posted Dec 24th 2005 7:00PM by Chris Paukert
Filed under: SUVs, Trucks/Pickups

General Motors announced Friday that it is expanding an earlier recall to include another 553,000 units. The action, which affects 1999-2002 model year sport-utilities and full-size pickups centers on potentially faulty anti-lock brake systems, which may unintentionally activate at low speeds. Owners of certain Chevrolet Silverados, Tahoes, Suburbans and Avalanches are among those who might find notices in their mailboxes. Not to be left out, GMC's doppelgangers, the Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL are also recall targets.

The initial recall this past August covered some 804,000 examples in 14 U.S. states. Friday's announcement adding Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C. to the mix increases the total to 21 states.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is continuing its investigation of 1.2 million of the General's SUVs and pickups . . .

Recalls fall but Toyota sees increase

Among Big 3, Ford is only one to report a rise; Toyota's figures more than double through Nov.

since the above article was published, GM has recalled another 1 million vehicles, which would easily see them past the 5 million mark!

this is in comparison to the 2.4 million for toyota, and 6 million for ford!

Uh oh, looks like people were actually injured in their GM due to bad brakes.
Makes the 4runner's little headgasket issue seem like child's play.

Before you post any more BS make shure you have the right statictics.

Toyota leads in recalls with 30.6 million cars and trucks in 2004, and 16.6 million added in 2005

Ford had about 7.6million recalls

GM had only 4.1 million including the one posted "553"
Following a record 30.8 million vehicles recalled last year, only 16.6 million have been recalled through November. At this point last year, 27.7 million vehicles had been recalled.

The industry is on pace to recall fewer vehicles than in other recent years as well. The average number of annual recalls during the previous 10 years, 1995 through 2004, is 19.3 million vehicles a year.

How many of these recalls were for cars in excess of ten years old?
Thanks Toyota for looking after the 89 4Runner.
