Re: Another Toyota Recall!

I understand that they are fixing the switches, but why are they still getting away with not adding the LATCH system that they also are required to do (after the 2002 model year)?

Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong told the News that there were engineering problems with installing such a system in the front seats of the 156,555 Tundras sold from model year 2003 to 2005."
The NHTSA will allow them not to have to add those, if they add the switch (thats only half compliance). I don't understand this.

It sounds like the regulation requires LATCH (after 2002) only if the vehicle is equipped with the automatic switch. Toyota's solution appears to be: deactivate the switch, then LATCH is no longer required.

Seems ass backwards to me... Instead of requiring Toyota to install the second required safety feature, they are letting Toyota remove the first safety feature? What does the "S" stand for in NHTSA again?? How does this make anything safer?

is it really Voluntary? To me is seems like they have been trying to argue with NHTSA!

Re: Another Toyota Recall!

well, they are following the letter of the law to their advantage, but it does seem very wormy to me. Toyota appears to be suffering growing pains in their mission to become #1. i don't applaud any automaker's troubles, but it is kind of poetic justice that Toyota is supposed to be the automotive savior of the world and finally there's some dirt surfacing. it's also funny that they're finding out that the bigger they get, the harder it is to pay attention to the little details that they wouldn't have missed as a smaller auto company. maybe that's a little insight into GM's situation....

That doesn't make any sense. They aren't turning off the airbags.

Re: Another Toyota Recall!

This is unbelievable. This just proves toyota could care less about people, and obviously only care about their own pockets. Even the cheapest ION2 comes with the LATCH system and the auto air bag shutoff sensor. It's clear here that TOYOTA is just another evil corporate behemoth.

Re: Another Toyota Recall!

I think it's just the trucks with the manual cut off switch. On GM trucks, only the regular cab has a manual cut off with "Off" and "Auto" and it has LATCH. But once you up to an extended cab or crew cab you loose the manual switch, but still have the automatic system but those don't have LATCH in the front seat. Seems like Toyota felt like putting cut-off switches on the extended and crew cabs and now they're regretting it, sounds like they had their head up a certain body cavity on the decision.

Re: Another Toyota Recall!

Is part of the idea here that having the switch implies to consumers that it's safe to use a carseat in the front..... therefore the NHTSA then requires LATCH in the front?

Either way, it shows that Toyota is just another profit driven corporation and not the savior of the world as the ultra left media and others seem to believe
