700K Nissans Recalled - Motors fail without warning

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21938658/

TOKYO - Japanese automaker Nissan said Thursday it is recalling 713,986 Altima and Sentra sedans in North America, especially in the United States, as their motors can stop functioning spontaneously.

The models affected are 2002 Altimas and Sentras and 2005-2006 models with 2.5 liter engines. An element in the car’s engine is susceptible to overheating and can stop working briefly, which can cause the entire engine to stop working.

The recall relates to 622,634 Altimas and 28,373 Sentras in the United States, a spokesperson for Nissan said. The rest of the cars in the recall were sold in Canada and Mexico.

Re: 700K Nissans Recalled - Motors fail without warning

Makes me wonder why Nissan would do this when 2000-2003 Cadillac/Oldmobile/Pontiac NorthStars and 3.5 Shortstars crank sensors do EXACTLY the same thing...

Nissan calls them back and fixes them... while GM just lets its owners of these (very nice) cars work it out with the dealers...

Who desides a recall is a recall? Do manufactures do this? or are they "forced" by the DOT/EPA/someone else?

Is this a

????

Nissan recalls 650,000 cars

Or is this recall in addition to the earlier post?
