3500 V-6 Recall

Posters in Edmund's are reporting that GM is recalling a run of 2005 Malibus/Maxxes/G6s and CSVs with the 3500 V-6. The harmonic balancer needs to be replaced (wish I knew what a harmonic balancer was). In one case, the Buick Terraza in question needed a new engine, which GM has offered to replace free. The recall was apparently received by affected owners in the mail this past week.

Harmonic balancer is the crankshaft pulley. Things can go bad quick when the balancer is not working right.

Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

I'm not really sold yet on these 60 degree V6's. The 60degree family has caused a lot of people to leave GM for good so I hope they will get the situation fixed quickly. Hopefully the upper intake gasket problem has been addressed because just about anyone I know that has has a V6 from this family has had an expensive leak there at least once in the lifetime of that engine.

My family has owned 2 vehicles with the 3400 V6 and I have a 05 G6 with the 3500 V6. So far the engines have been trouble free. The highest mileage was a Olds minivan that had 45k miles on it. It was totaled in front of the house by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel in the middle of the night.

Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

Problems with a harmonic balancer not seating properly has nothing to do with the fact that it is part of the 60 degree engine family. That's like engine descimination or something

Angry Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

My 3800 V6 Bonneville had the upper intake manifold fail at 70k miles. I was (and still am) soooooo mad about that. The total bill was like $1100. I'm still a GM Fan, but I am very disappointed that it died and was never recalled. :-(

Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

From what I understand, the manifolds are of a different design, and the failures in the 3.1/3.4/3.8 shouldnt be happening in the 3.5/3.9

ouch. it only costs about 200 to fix on your own.

regardless, it's something gm should have fixed a long time ago.

did you replace the lower intake gaskets when you did it?

Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

It is a really easy recall! (Thank God!) All I do is remove the fly wheel inspection shield, two bolts, and put my flywheel tool in there so it wont move. Then you torque the balencer bolt to 100 or so (cant remember on vacation last two weeks) lbs/ft and voila! All done! No biggie, plus the bolt is only off about 10lbs /ft anyway.

The intake manifold leaks are caused by the gasket design not the engine. The 3.8 and 5.7 also have intake manifold leaks.

Prior to the 3.1 becoming the 3100, It was not a common thing to have a leak in the intake.

Re: 3500 V-6 Recall

Sounds like a manufacturing flaw to me.....some joker at the plant (or machine, whichever does that phase of the assembly) didn't torque a nut down correctly. I would hardly blame the 60° HV V6 engines for this recall.

the 3500 and 3900 seem to be decent engines. Don't blame the engine for a manufacturing flaw.
