Honda recalling Civic over accelerator pedal

Thursday, November 10, 2005

BY KEN THOMAS
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- Honda Motor Co. recalled about 25,000 Civics on Thursday because the accelerator pedal was improperly installed on some 2006 models, which could cause a crash.

If the pedal is improperly installed, it could come loose, cause the throttle to stick and raise the potential for a crash. Honda spokesman Sage Marie said there have been no crashes or injuries linked to the issue in the popular-selling vehicle.

The "vast majority" of the 25,298 vehicles under recall in the United States have not yet been sold, Marie said. A dealer inspecting the vehicles discovered the problem in late September and reported it to the automaker, leading to an internal investigation, he said.

Honda redesigned the sedan for the 2006 model year and it continues to post strong sales figures. The Japanese automaker sold 23,911 Civics in October, up 14 percent from last October, according to Autodata Corp.

The company sold 257,749 Civics in the first nine months of this year, down 1.2 percent from 262,958 sold last year. Honda did not immediately have a breakdown of how many 2006 models have been sold thus far.

The redesign includes a new floor-mounted gas assembly that involves the accelerator. The sedans under recall were manufactured from early June through early October, and countermeasures have been put in place on the assembly line to fix the problem, Marie said.

Owners were being notified of the recall this month and told to bring their cars to a dealership. Dealers will either reset the pedal or replace the assembly at no cost to consumers.

HHHMMM, Honda known for it's near perfect reputation puts out a new Civic that can cause an accident and injure or kill someone. Kinda poetic- supporting the Japanese economy by buying their cars is killing the US economy-and by buying a Japanese car you run the risk of killing yourself or someone else.

God, not this exaggeration again...

This is quite a serious recall, though.

I think Honda has been kinda slacking with their quality recently. This supports my claim.
At least they caught this early before it killed someone.

Can you reduce the size of your sig pic? Geez.

It's one thing when a new model-year car gets recalled due to some electrical or computer system defect--those are complex systems. But when they can't attach an accelerator correctly...well, that's just pathetic.

I don't recall the import lovers ever denying that...especially lately.

Re: 06 Civic recalled

Seems most new models, regardless of origin, are having first-year teething issues.

Personally, I think I've learned my lesson for the final time and will stay away from them.

The '03 Accord was far from a gem.

I think the worst one I've seen recently (and I predicted it) is the '06 Sonata (new engine, new style, new plant, new workers). Now they're complaining about V-6 valve clatter. On top of trannie issues and numerous build quality issues.

Some of GMs models (the ones rehashed on the same platform) do quite well in even the first year. But that's about it from GM that does.

Re: 06 Civic recalled

Is it just me, or are import recalls becoming just as much of a regular occurrence as Big Three recalls?

You're off a little with that. My mom got an 05 Accord because he Aurora was having problems. My mom went to the dealer with the intentions of purchasing an 06. You almost got it though.

This seems like a serious recall. Hopefully no injuries come as a result. I feel like Honda has done a great job by getting this recall out quickly. I don't think Honda is slacking on quality these days as someone else said, I actually believe they are trying to better their quality as best they can.

Recalls happen, and seeing how this is a fairly serious recall I don't see how anyone could find it humourus.

Re: 06 Civic recalled

Just because one company has one recall doesn't mean that their quality is going down. No car is 100% safe from recalls, just some get more than others.
I agree with ElmerMCR, Honda did a very good job on getting this recall out before the majority-affected cars were sold.

Re: 06 Civic recalled

Hmm...Imports can actually have a recall! And this is a big deal...it can make you crash. It isn't the radio knob falling off. This is pretty low..an accelerator pedal not being on right....that should be checked.

Re: 06 Civic recalled

Well hopefully there are more recalls... as much as I don't want to like a Honda, and don't like the sedan... the coupe IS pretty sharp. It'll keep selling like crazy unless more problems creep up. Hopefully ntohing dangerous... just enough to tarnish the reputation!
