First rule of marketing is that the numbers never lie, if BMW 7-series cars were percieved as being equal to S-Class Mercedes the sales would be close to equal - they are not.

Bentley is upscale from Mercedes with it's lowest priced car at the upper end of the Mercedes range (other than the SLR) and Bentley outsells Maybach which would be the proper competitor for Bentley.

I don't care if any current BMW owners ever buy a Pontiac Alpha or Zeta RWD car, there are more buyers out there that like the BMW's driving dynamics that will be more than happy with a Pontiac that has similar performance for thousands of dollars less and with better styling, the new 3-series does not look that great nor the new 5-series. It has been a while since BMW's styling was a good as the cars performance.
