pontiac is far from dead and not going anywhere.

Totally agree. Solstice convertible and coupe, G6 convertible and coupe, plus the G8 is a nice start to a lineup.

If G5 were available with the same high-performance package as Cobalt, then who cares if it's a rebadge. Nothing wrong with a having a car with that capability in the lineup.

IMO, if they just added a new high-powered coupe, like a GTO or Trans Am, the brand would be in very good shape. That would add legitimacy to the brand's entire existence.

Re: Pontiac Needs to Close

With GM's new idea of turning Pontiac into a "small car" company....
I have to revive this thread...

GM.... You need to close Pontiac.

Re: Pontiac Needs to Close

If the idea of making Pontiac a small car brand like Mercury has been announced to become, then even though I don't like this idea, I would sadly & reluctantly agree w/Mgescuro on this, should this come to fruition.

Should Pontiac one day die/close, it will be a very sad day in the auto world.

Re: Pontiac Needs to Close

I do wonder as to how Holden would do herer in the states. If GM keeps Pontiac, they should atleast narrow their brand down. No G3, no G5, and obviously no Torrent. They should improve the G6 to give it some meaning for being alive.

Re: Pontiac Needs to Close

Beyond the VE/WM platform, there is nothing great about Holden. The rest of the line up is a bunch of GM's Opel/Vauhaul and Daewoo products. Kind of like what Pontiac is now.

GM is out of cash to invest in all-new or significantly differentiated product for Pontiac. Given that 40% of Pontiac's sales are fleets and that the overall volume of the brand will decline significantly with the end of the Grand Prix and shifting of the Torrent to GMC, what is the reason for the brand anymore.

Mercury being made into a small car brand is overstated - they have one potential small car product coming and at the same time the Sable, Mountaineer and Grand Marquis end. Once Ford gets all three brands into combined stores, watch Mercury go away. GM should take the same approach to Pontiac - continue the BPG store strategy, but channel new product only to Buick, including small cars (have you seen the average age of a Vibe driver?). If all you can afford to do is slap a Pontiac grille on the Aveo or Cobalt, why not just substitute a Buick version.

GM really need to stop it already with these ridiculous alpha- numeric names.
