And Chevy is missing a giant opportunity to bring an Alpha 4 door sedan to the market. They probably don't want to steal the 2 or 3 people looking at buying a CTS.
I don't believe that because they throw more at and keep the Camaro far more exiting than the ATS coupe. I'm sure with them doing the same to a Chevy version of the CTS it would out sell the 'CTS' and whatever the 'SS' did combined.
If GM could find a way to get a Chevy on the Alpha+ chassis at the right price, that would be the way to go. Omega should stay Cadillac exclusive for now and it would help amortize the Alpha line.
It's gotta be a few more than that with about 13,000 sold over the four-year run. And apparently GM just doesn't feel that number as high enough to justify such a type of car. But then figure in that GM advertised the car none at all, offered extremely few options (4) and made the ordering /delivery process into a long and winding road (generally about 6 months).
With production of this type of vehicle in the US, off an existing platform, with a full range of models and trim levels, they should be able to sell many times that number.
It is very sad. I can't tell you how many people I hear talking about their new cars, excuse me crossovers, and how great they are. "This car is great in the snow, its so safe for my family, it has tons of room!" Little do they know I've gone on worse roads, gotten in worse accidents, and traveled with more cargo than these people can ever dream of, all with a cheap pre-bailout GM economy car.
And I passed one on the interstate this morning. Black with the Holden badges....& a Cadillac V badge on the trunklid. And an HSV badge on the lower front fenders.
It's a pity that GM never took this car seriously. Never gave it a real name. Never gave it it a fuller lineup. Didn't really market it. They violated every marketing 101 rule - and yet, this car still has developed a cult following.
Amazing what happens when you drop a glorious V8 into a competent RWD chassis with an available manual trans, wrapped in a car that can be used on a daily basis.
It's almost like the powers that be within GM had a feud going on or something. Like you say, violate all the rules and then kill it kind of like one side to the other: see I told you so. They always seem to find a way to half ass something and then turn around and pull the plug. Only problem was this time it was with a really "glorious" product in a lot of ways.
Finding a new 2015 model is no problem in Pittsburgh, and nearly every major dealership has received a new 2017 SS. There are even stick models around the area. 20% off moved some, but AWD is a big deal for sedan owners in this very hilly area. I've heard "plenty" of people tell me if it was available in awd they would have considered it too.
I do know a lot more Impala's, Malibu's, and Camaro's would sell here if awd was available. I just replaced my Verano Turbo with an ATS AWD after considering a Regal, but could not wait for the new version. I believe Chevrolet has been the largest selling CAR brand here since the 30's. Pittsburgh is definitely Chevy country....
I keep going back to Chrysler and what they deliver with so few resources. Can you imagine the badass cars Chrysler would have jammed into their showrooms if they had access to architectures like Alpha and Omega? Dear Lord!
GM could deliver a new Impala SS if they wanted to, in fact a family of Impala cars. They have everything they need to create such a product. Everything that is, except the will to do so.
GM would probably make just as much profit if it shed all but North America and Chinese operations.
I think that's the sad realty here, outside of those two markets, the business activity and return
in all other markets doesn't justify maintaining investment. Wall street knows it and GM knows it.

Chevy Tahoes, my friend, Chevy Tahoes. The day of the police prowler sedan are drawing to a close. The top vehicle for police use in the future is the Ford Explorer. The SUV is replacing the sedan for a number of reasons. One of these is that sedans make a poor platform for the plethora of equipment and technology that police departments install in their vehicles.
