Re: GMI First Look: 2010 Camaro

Wise move on GM's part to push the RS more than the SS. I didn't see that coming. And history repeats itself as the Camaro costs just abit more than the 'Stang, but with a few more horsies for that money.

The King Has Returned

In 2001, there was a dreadful time when all around the internet, the rumors were turned into truth. GM had come out to say that the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird were going to be put on hiatus for reasons unexplained. At first, the talk of sales numbers and how it sat in the market place was a big concern. It sure was not gas prices as the cost for a gallon of gas in my fair state of New Jersey was well under a dollar. I had just gotten into this hobby, and just started to fall in love with Camaro when GM killed the car.

Think your memory is a bit fuzzy. No way was gas under $1/gallon in 2001.

I don't care if it a rebadge but I will not touch this car unless it says "Trans Am" or "Firebird" with an arrowhead. This is just like someone that is a Chevy Truck person, they wouldn't touch a GMC with a ten foot pole.

After the mullett fanboys buy their cars, the Camaro will live or die by price. GM predicted 100,000 annual Aura sales...then 80...then 60...

I like this car, but I won't pay one dime more for "heritage" or style. It needs to be far more than competitive - like the Corvette the Camaro needs to be the unequivical choice.

Here around Houston in 1999 it was $0.89 a gallon, so maybe Al was just off by a couple of years.

Re: GMI First Look: 2010 Camaro

The Z28 was actually supposedly getting the LSA from the Cadillac CTS-V which is supercharged and makes 550hp. As stated, rumor has it that this project has been placed on hold while GM trys to not go under. Fbodfather says it has not been cancelled and to have faith, but a lot of other unnamed sources of unknown reliability claim it is dead.

Start of production is February 16th, 2009. As a basic guide, I've been told that you can goto Ford.com and build a Mustang however you want your Camaro to be. Add $1,000 to whatever price the Mustang comes to, and you will be in a general ballpark of what your Camaro will cost. Around $33,000 for the V8 Camaro.

You can see the colors and other information at www.chevy.com/camaro

Re: GMI First Look: 2010 Camaro

I'd give the interior an A-. The radio screen looks like it c/w/should be larger. The round side vents don't match the rectangular center vents. HVAC buttons/knobs are questionable- I foresee I quick re-design.
Exterior: front: B. Relatively unintersting and unexciting. Hood is nice, but lights need something more, not sure, perhaps 4 lights instead of two, something that would make it less plain. I'd have pulled out the bumper cover to give it a chin, more character.
side: A. the best angle for this car. love the small greenhouse. looks muscular toward the rear. strange but exciting surfaces and angles.
rear: C. makes no sense. Why the lights so small? Why no real bumper- on a muscle car? The huge lower black bumper part belongs on a Pontiac, doesn't quite fit here since it's not receeded but at the same level as the bumper cover.
Overall a very unharmonious design. More interesting than the Mustang but not as good looking as a Challenger.
Can't wait to see one in real life.

I was going to say the same thing. In 2001 gas wasn't 'well under' $1. It was just over $1 IIRC.

I believe it was more like $1.17 in 2001. I know my partner moved in with me in 2002. We lived across the street from a gas station and he distinctly remember gas was about $1.30 when he moved in with me.

It's currently $3.73 here now. (Down from $3.86 a week ago.)

PS- Great article.
