The Definitive GM Performance Car List 1986-2006
Composed by Ming
www.GMinsidenews.com

See Part II Here: 1973-1985

PLEASE READ:

The following list of cars orignally came from THIS thread, which was a list of several GM cars I'd hoped to see more of in racing games, particularly those like Gran Turismo where Japanese and European cars seem to have a wide variety of options in several car classes available for cars produced in the last two decades. GM's offerings in these games are often limited old muscle cars from the 1960's and mostly Camaros and Corvettes since, with a smattering of concept cars that never made it to production. Most conspicuous is the dead gap of virtually no other performance-trim cars from the mid 1970's until 2000+. This has only recently begun to change, with the Cobalt, GTO and some Cadillacs getting in to some games, but the 1980-2000 GM cars (aside from 'Vettes and Camaros) largely remain lost to the past.

This list is an attempt to expand the conciousness of what is modern "GM Performance", (not concepts, only real production cars) including GM's close-to-stock racing efforts, and "tuner house" developed models.

I've also since realized that it is a good list to send to your friends who think GM hasn't produced anything performance-oriented except Corvettes and Camaros since the 60's!

Note:While "definitive" it is by no means "complete". It's more of a short and sweet list of the hot stuff from GM over the last 20 years or so. The original idea of this list was to not have much redundancy among model years (little change between years) and between brands (rebadges), and no concept cars or trucks (to be covered in other lists).

The list includes a few 2007 models, but for the most part is now considered "finished" from 1986-2006. Thanks for your help in building this list of great GM performance cars! - Ming

Watch this list for changes!

Things to be covered in other lists:

1. Trucks
2. Pre 1986 cars
3. CONCEPT CARS like the Pontiac Rageous or Chevy Borrego (one-off SEMA tuner type cars based on production vehicles are OK). They were cool, but GM didn't build 'em for us, so we shouldn't reward GM for not putting its money where its concepts were.

4. Race cars that have almost nothing in common with production cars aside from the name. (Current "Monte Carlo" in NASCAR, for instance)

Re: The Definitive GM Performance Car List 1986-200x

A minor nitpick: There was no Sunbird GT Turbo in 1991. For '91, the turbo 4 was dropped and Sunbirds used the 3.1L V6 for uplevel models, like the Cavalier.

The Turbo Sunbird definitely belongs on the list, for 1987-1990. 0-60 in 7.2 seconds when an Integra was in the upper 8's and a GTI in the lower 8's was very impressive.

Hey Ming have you put the Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer on the list? I know they only made a couple but any car that tops out at 254+ mph deserves to be on the list.

Sorry for the very, very late response.
The Comp/G is a Grand Prix. It is FWD as opposed to RWD and it has almost 100HP less than the 2004 GTO. That is why.

Re: The Definitive GM Performance Car List 1986-200x

The Allante Northstar is on the list for Cadillac, and I saw a car the other day that was an "Allante Pininfarina." Apparently GM sent of few Allantes over to Italy's premier car design studio to have the body reworked a little. Same engine just cosmetics. That's a pretty worthless addition, but I bet it's a rare caddy.

So lets see. Toyota lied about recalls. Lied about their HP ratings... I wonder how much truth is in their milage ratings..

Check out CSV's site

For trivia HSV, CSV & Brock HDT are not deemed to be 'aftermarket' or a 'tuner' in Oz. Instead they were licensed by Govt as a Tier Two Manufacturer. This manufacturer status means their modified product is legally defined/identified/registered as an CSV/HSV vehicle (not Holden) and they pass Govt Type Compliance as such. IIRC the great old Brock HDT cars (predecessor to HSV) wore Holden ID also, but HSV & CSV do not

Ming, in oldsmobile, you forgot to add Oldsmobile Alero GLS, my alero is a real speed demon, but not too speed demon-ey otherwise I'd be getting speeding tickets left and right
