I am a Cadillac owner of the STS V8 and do believe the DTS needs a new platform and RWD/AWD would be my preference, but as nice as the Cadillac DTS is, it is not my preference, but I certainly understand the appeal of a fullsize Cadillac sedan with traditional luxury ride, powerful V8 and features. The '76 is based on the earlier platform, and is 10x the car the '79 is. The build quality, materials, door thunks, etc. are so much better that I can't believe Cadillac customers didn't riot when the new models came out. It's sad to see what happened. Of course, I feel better about the '79 as soon as I see a wheezing HT-4100 or 307 Olds-equipped Brougham from the '80s, or a whalish example of the '90s Fleetwoods.

I owned a 1979 Coupe deVille d'Elegance for 5 wonderful years as a young man... It was fast for it's time...it could easily wipe a late 70's & early 80's muscle car off the line....and as far as the 425 V8....hey, no replacement for displacement! My CDV was well built and was an extremely good car... When I sold the car in 1996, and having every receipt from the original owner...apart from normal maintainence & wear items the car had less than $500 in repairs... A very well built car and when I'm wealthy & sucessful...I plan to get another and convert it to FI with a Holley Pro-Jection kit!

Re: Cadillac Should Lose the DTS
Oh, the '79 isn't junk ... it's just easy to see where GM started cutting corners in comparison to the older cars, in stuff like the headliners and window guts.
The 425 is an excellent motor. She's happy to cruise at 80 all day, or pull all the way to 100 and beyond in short order. The engine, transmission, rear end and body are generally bulletproof, and the ride is fantastic. I'd advise you to get another ASAP.

Re: Cadillac Should Lose the DTS
In restating, any "premium" product catered to a "ten-grand discount" audience is not only an unprofitable product, but one worthy of discontinuation. A "ten-grand discount" customer base is just as unprofitable and useless, whether it's Cadillac, Lincoln, or anybody else. They can go buy their "deals," and their "program cars" (i.e. Used Cars) wherever they want; that's what they're buying, not actual premium vehicles. Cadillac should stop making them altogether if they really want to be Cadillac.
A real S-Class competitor, and not a Town Car competitor, is that for which Cadillac should strive. Dang it, I hate it when I sound like Mgescuro...
