Whine noise in 2006 Chevy Equinox LT AWD

To my dismay, my Equinox developed a problem. When I hit 30 MPH or around there, a whine noise develops. It gets higher pitched as I go faster and lower pitch when I slow down. I don't think it is an engine problem as the noise isn't exactly where the 3400 is. It is closer to the axles. So I am guessing it is a bearing. I am taking a precaution and not driving it until we can get it in to fix it. Maybe a bit overboard, but I want my Equinox not break down when on the highway. This is my first problem with a GM product, and I am guessing it is a minor one hopefully. It has 2860 miles on it.

I guess it's time to get a Rav4. BTW, be sure to show us pics when you get one!:p

Update: Took it to dealer, they said upon assembly, the 'Nox didn't get enough lubrication where the driveshaft is going through a bracket. They sanded it down, and relubed it. No more whine noise!

Bad news, the noise is back. But now shows up at 15-20 MPH. Man, I am just getting this bad omen about this 'Nox. First the noise, second having to get the windshield totally replaced(not the cars fault stupid stone haha), and now the noise again. So I had this car for a half a year and had 3 problems with it. Not getting a good feeling for it. If this 'Nox turns out to be a lemon and can get my money back under the lemon law, I am eying the Saturn Outlook( if I like the looks of it) or just get another 'Nox to replace this one. But, don't think it will since this is so far such a minor problem. Worst case scenario is that they replace the drivetrain system except the engine and tranny( primarily the driveshaft and where the driveshaft goes through. Best case scenerio: Fixing it for the 2nd time will make it go away forever.

Take it back and make them fix it completely. Sounds like they didn't really fix it the first time.

may be u have a supercharger, just kiddin. if the noise doesnt increase with increasing engine speed then it is not the engine cus it increases when u go faster. could be a wheel bearing, brake stuck or somthin else with drive train.

I know what the problem is as this is the 2nd time this problem showed up. I am just going to tell them fix it this time and I don't care if you have to replace the whole drivetrain!

Just picked it up from the dealer. They replaced the bearing and everything. A misely $36 charge( plus an oil change). And no noise. I also came home with a 350 Small Block V8.

I am having a difficult time imaging the drive train needing lubrication because it is going through a bracket. If the problem is external, then any lubrication applied to the shaft or the bracket will be thrown off, washed off.. If the shaft is exiting the drive box, there will be a seal (probably smoother than a 16 finish) or a bearing with the outer side sealed or 2 seals. When somebody uses the word whine, I think overloaded or underlubed bearing or, more so, a gear train with too small (or none) a backlash. The backlash would have started from the beginning so this can be ruled out if you put 2800 miles on it before the problem arose.

Ooops, I didn't read your last input regarding the bearing. BTW, what type of bearing is it? Single row, double row, self aligning,...? I am also curious regarding its mfr (GM long ago, in the 80's and prior, manufactured one of the top notch bearings in the US under the New Departure name).

Can't imagine sanding and lubing anything in a new vehicle with 2800 miles on it. I've done this with worn out lawnmowers and so forth, but surely not a new car. Hope the actual later repair fixed it for you.

Re: Whine noise in 2006 Chevy Equinox LT AWD

What was sanded? And it was probably emeried (not sand paper). But that makes no sense. Being an inner race rotation (the shaft rotates- the housing is stationary) the fit between the shaft and bearing bore is very tight and held within .0005". If we are talking lip seals, a 16 or better finish is required on the shaft (a seal problem would not create a whine; it would cause a leak).
Somebody telling me that they "sanded" a shaft or something to that effect. That is why I am skittish of who works on my vehicles.
