It sucks, and sometimes it is you it happens to, other times it is someone else. You buy a warranty to hopefully protect yourself from having to pay for it, but in this case, your gamble of not going with more mileage (presumably due to the increase in cost of the warranty) didnt pan out.

Going with another manufacturer doesnt guarantee anything at all. You are starting from scratch again, and more than likely you wont have a transmission problem simply based on odds. But not buying a warranty is not the best plan of action if you ask me, I have seen them pay for themselves over and over and over again, on all makes and all models.

Sorry if it sounds like a rant, but when it isnt you thats broke down, (not you, but anyone in general) you say, ahh well, it happens. But when it is you that has the unlikely trans failure, you must be getting screwed somehow.
My brothers Acura TL and Honda Pilot both had their trannies go - Honda isnt providing any special relief outside of warrenty either.

Re: Transmission Warranty

It's not just GM all transmissions have issues. I've been rebuilding them for 29 yrs. The imports are just as bad and not as cheap to rebuild.

Re: Transmission Warranty

I got a solution for this. I know I know, thank me later.

I mean c'mon, its an autocrapic, watu expect? I probably went through 4 of them since i've started driving. And guess what, my 2006 Corolla is gonna need a new one because 1st gear is slipping. 160,000 miles.

My old toyota pickup got totaled at 340,000 miles and it still had an original clutch. M/T > A/T

People need to get their fat lazy butts away from A/T cars and drive M/Ts. This society is soo lazy..

sorry, back to the topic. Go buy a used transmission. You'd be a fool to rebuild one.

Re: Transmission Warranty

I installed many used trannies some work, some don't, the ones that don't the owner has to pay re and re again...........you want to gamble go ahead. Green is green, in my pocket. Then you have the guy that gets the used tranny and it works for 2 maybe 3 weeks and it burns up and he wants to know if i will cover it.........Get a life pal you supplied it. That is why I get the customer to supply the used unit if they don't want to rebuild.............rebuild is the way to go, if you go to someone who does good work, no cutting corners.

Re: Transmission Warranty

Unit for unit we have far fewer failures on an Automatic tranny's than on manual. The cost of a clutch these days costs far more than any savings in fuel economy. My figures could be skewed because most of the manual transmissions we see are in Trans-Ams. GTO's etc and those cars tend to get abused, but our trans tech gets bored because he gets so few transmission repairs these days. Usually when a manual transmission goes it is toast and needs to be replaced. In my opinion an automatic transmission is more reliable and can handle much more torque and abuse than its manual counterpart. This is based on my experience in the field and not any studies I have seen. I know all the stick fans out there are going to think I am nuts but I call them as I see them.

Re: Transmission Warranty

I agree with Dr Gizmo, I have a transmission shop in Newcastle Canada, I see mostly automatics but the standards you do see are abused, the automatics aren't much better.
People think if it works do worry about it, they need service and maintenance every year.
I have a 2003 GMC Sierra with 303,000 km and it has never been rebuilt.

Re: Transmission Warranty

ask for goodwill consideration, it never hurts. If you had an extended GMPP which expired ask for consideration, even a share adjustment, if basic and ran out still ask for consideration. As a GM rep for 32 years we did this, how is the Dealership service manager communicating to the Warranty Manager ? Is he or she on board for you ? Get them involved, you just might be pleased with the outcome !!

Re: Transmission Warranty

Without going into details of my case, goodwill consideration got me a reprieve with my '00 Bravada, so it is a viable quest.

With GM's awareness of public perception, you may be able to work something out. They are willing to gain customer confidence with their vehicle return policy, so if they were to fix your transmission woes, you'd probably remain as a loyal GM customer. The alternative might make you look elsewhere for your next vehicle; something that they can't afford to do right now.

Take it slow and calmly when you do your negotiation.

Yeah, but if it's not abused, a manual should last the life of the car. Even the clutch should last that long. You must get some pretty bad ones.

I agree that an auto can tow more, but that's its only advantage.

I don't think a transmission that fails under 100k is a quality item. It's almost as if it's designed to fail just past the warranty's expiration.
