With extended warranties, some dealerships only work with extended warranties from certain companies because others go bankrupt, refuse to pay, or will only pay 30% or other ridiculously low rates on claims.

So if you're going to buy one, check with your dealership first to make sure it's a vendor they'll work with. (If the dealer only works with extended warranties that he sells to you, then I'd say don't trust that dealership. Shop elsewhere.)

Spoke to GM case in their words " was escalated" to District Specialist, she told me to take it back to Dealer have them tear down tranny and then they will let me know if they will offer any covarage. Her reason is they dont know what is wrong with the tranny. I spoke with Srvc Mgr and he said that if I return it sign off on $3500 replacement, let them tear it down and GM will probably pay for part. My problem is i already spent $400 for dealer to tell me it is broke and GM says they need more info. I can take it to a regular mechanic and get a GM 5yr/100,000 mile tranny put in for around $2000. If I have to pay 1/2 of the $3500 i would be happy, but it sounds like a big risk on a maybe. Does any of this sound legit or is the Dealer just jerking me around?

It'll cost you $250 more at a independent mechanic IF GM decides to pay for 50% of the $3500 bill.....what happens if they decide not to?

I'd probably go independent cause the dealer already screwed you out of $400.

Friend of mine (loyal Chev guy) just had trans fail in wife's TB. Friend's BIL is a GM tech. As soon as friend started describing circumstances of failure, BIL laughed and said common problem. Something about planetary gears or sun gears.

That is exactly what I am wondering. I took the Trailblazer in and talked to
Service Manager again and he said he couldnt promise anything but he thinks the price of the transmission will be what GM covers. GM rep also makes it sound like they will pick up parts but also wont commit to anything.

Got call back from GM district Specialist and she said GM will pick up cost of new transmission $1800 but I have to pay labor $1200 + $200 for the labor to take the old transmission apart and tell GM what broke. Not great but much better than $3500. They still wont do anything on instrument cluster.

Well GM or Dealer depending on how you look at it paid for the new Transmission $1800, and I had to pay $1400 in labor. This included $1200 to pull and install new tranny and $200 to tell GM what was wrong with old transmission. So my final cost $1400 for new one and $400 to flush out broken transmission. New transmission has 5 yr 100,000 mile warranty, dont know why old one didnt have that. Now if I could get them to do something about instrument cluster without paying $600.

We have a 2003 Trailbazer LT and the inly problem that weve had it something with the fan, got it fixed for like 400 bucks, then it started to happen again, the dealer didnt fix it correctly, so they fixed it for free.

Dudes, I didnt read through the whole thread, and really dont want to. Whoever said to never buy extended warranties must have either a: gotten screwed at one point b: bought one and didnt need it, so they felt like they got screwed, or c: has never had any problems with their car.

I use customers extended warranties EVERY DAY. As a matter of fact, I am repairing a transmission on a Tahoe with 90k on it right this minute. $2300 and the customer has a $0 deductible extended warranty that is picking up the tab. I say ALWAYS buy an extended warranty if you can afford it, or if you plan on keeping the vehicle long term.

Now, I do agree NEVER buy an extended warranty at the time you purchase the vehicle. Say factory warranty is 3 years/36k miles. Some people think it's a good idea to spend $1,000 for a 5 year/75k miles warranty. I say why pay NOW for a warranty you may never use?.....if the car is a real lemon in that initial 36k miles, you'll probably ditch the car anyway. Also, since the first 3 years, and 36k miles are FREE, this person would have really paid $1,000 for 2 years, and 39k miles.

So an extended warranty can be a good investment (gamble), but only purchase just before the factory warranty expires. Plus you can shop around....it doesn't need to be bought from the dealership who sold you the vehicle.

The only problem with that is the warranty increases, sometime triple, if you wait. And most have to be purchased while the car is still under factory warranty.

Yeah, I owned a 2006 Trailblazer LT and its transmission started to go bad at 79,000 miles, I sold it to a guy in Indianapolis for 18,560.

Come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse or drive.

That will kill them quicker than heat or towing.

Also, based on our car purchases over the years, the cost of the extended warranty tells a lot about the quality of the vehicle. A $600 warranty is a real good recommendation for a car, $2400 indicates some real expensive repairs might be required.
