Angry This Should Not Happen!

My Potiac Sunfire is only 5 years old and yet my rear view mirror has fallen off the windshield. My husband and I have both looked at it and agree that the rear view mirror is shotty construction. I have never owned a vehicle in which the mirror falls off. I expect it in a car that's more than 10 years old but 5? This is insane! I shutter to think what's going to happen next! I mean, if I can't keep my rear view mirror up, what else is going to fall to pieces in my car???

Where do you live? What type of environmental conditions has it been exposed to? It should not happen anyway, but it might lead to some speculation in possible answers at least.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

O my god, the mirror is falling, the mirror is falling!!! The world is going to end!!!! Please, get over yourself. Its caused by people not cracking his/her windows during the heat of the summer. The glue that holds the mirror up gets to hot and looses its grip. Won't take 5 seconds to glue it back on either.

BTW, this happens on all cars, not just GM's. When you do get the mirror glued back on, remember to crack your windows next time and the glue will last a lot longer.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

Well if GM uses the same glue for rearview mirrors that they used to stick ceiling liners to their 80s cars, no wonder the mirrors fall off!

Re: This Should Not Happen!

It has happened in my brother's old 1997 Monte Carlo all the time. And that was like in 2001. It isn't a big deal, just go to Wal-Mart and buy some super-super glue and put it right back on. lol

Re: This Should Not Happen!

I am sure my 1979 Lebaron did that to me in 1989. Of course I had to use thumb tacks to keep the headliner off my noggin........ what a sweet ride that was.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

OMG? Now you have to spend $3 on mirror glue!

What's next, the air filter? Geez, I'd get rid of that thing.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

My glue-on GM rear view mirrors fall off in all seasons.

Get a $2 glue kit from an auto parts store and read the instructions. Remove the mirror mounting plate with an Allen wrench or torx depending, then stick the %$#@ plate back on the window! Be sure to use a lot of explatives because that helps the glue set faster. Also buy a second kit, because it's going to happen again.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

I think you're all missing the point...I don't think a mirror should be falling off on any recently built car.

No, it isn't the end of the world, but it is frustrating. A lot of us look at the Sunfire and think "cheap". A lot of people look at Civics in the same way.

But "cheap" is perspective-based. For many people, the money that any car costs is a huge expense, and regardless of what kind of car a person buys, they expect some level of quality.

I think many of you would be upset if something in your vehicle randomly just fell apart or broke off.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

It can happen to any vehicle, as 90% of windshields are from the same supplier, same can be said for the glue holding the mirror (usually Permatex) and the mirrors too. A friend who works at a Toyota store complained that they had to replace mirrors in like 5 new Corrollas that were all in the same row, pointing the same way in the summer.
If the windshield/car gets too hot the glue will seperate. It sucks, but has NO bearing on the quality of the vehicle.
How has the car operated prior to this?

Re: This Should Not Happen!

Get over yourself. It's a common problem on all cars, especially in hotter climates. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to go to Wal-Mart or any parts store and pick up rearview mirror adhesive for $2.

And I find it odd that someone with such high standards would own a Sunfire.

Re: This Should Not Happen!

I had to help a lady with her brand new Acura RL with her rearview...it fell right off as she was driving. 4243 miles on it.
It happens, get some glue and put it back on. If the fenders came loose and fell off when driving...then its a different story.
