rail dust

has anyone had problems with rail dust. i have a white 05 tahoe. 3 months after i bought it i noticed little orange spots in the paint. i took it to the dealer and they told me it was rail dust. they cleaned it and it came right back. i have had it cleaned 3 times now. i called GM and they aren't helping at all. of course now its out of warranty. they say it's something i'm doing but i know it's embedded in the clear coat. i just wondered if anyone else had the same problem

Re: rail dust

I had the orange spots on my white Silverado. I washed it, clay bar'ed it, and waxed it. My dealership told me it was from the chemicals sprayed on the road during the winter. Try doing what I did and see if it helps. Mine are gone. The clay bar really does the trick!

Your dealer lied to you, we have vehicles arvive with rail dust new from the factory. White shows the worse.

Yes Clay bar, or Fall Out Gel, works the best

Re: rail dust

they have clay bared it 3 times now. it's on the bottom of the doors and really bad on the liftgate. they say if it was rail dust it would be on the top of the car (hood etc.)my guess is that it's not on the hood because they covered it with plastic sheeting. does anyone know what parts they cover before shipping. my problem is that they have clay bared it 3 times and it's not helping. so either i am getting it on there somehow or it was on there when i bought it and won't come out. what do you think?if it was brake dust or something on the roads would it be so bad on the liftgate too? would an acid wash help?

Re: rail dust

Try taking it to a paint shop for a recommendation. Have you taken any pics? If you can establish a paper trail with your dealership and take plenty of pics, you may get GM to repaint it for you.

Re: rail dust

i have taken pics and the dealer has too. they said they showed the pics to their gm service rep and he said it was brake dust or environmental fallout. it's funny how the dealer said it was rail dust to begin with and now that they can't get it out it's something else. i really thought i would be treated better by gm. i have been a gm employee for 15 years and it don't mean crap to them.

Do you think going to another dealer would help?

Re: rail dust

i took it to another dealer and 3 body shops and they all say its rail dust and its embedded in the clearcoat. thats why i'm so frustrated with gm. i've told them that and they refuse to listen to what everyone else is saying because the original dealer sent pics to the service rep. the service rep has never looked at my car. he's just going by what this one guy from the body shop is telling him. they won't let me talk to him. i could call bbb or get an attorney for free through work but i really don't want to deal with all that. maybe i'll have to

Re: rail dust

sounds like an acid wash. maybe the dealer should have tried that to begin with. i will call and see if they want to give it a shot. they probably won't and i don't feel that it's something i should have to do. it's not like this is a new problem. it's been 3 years now

Were the spots removed when you clay barred it? Try using a swirl remover after clay barring the car. That should remove any spots that's left. My parents live on a busy street and the car they park out on the street get's covered with little rust spots after a few months. I think all the traffic on the road kicks up dust particles and at night the condensation makes the particles stick into the paint. You get build up at the rear of the car because of the way the air flows around the car. It seems like dust get's deposited on the rear bumper of most cars. Take a quick drive down a dirt road and you'll see most of the dust lingers on the back of the car.

It sound like you may be in an area where there are a lot of metal dust. You'll probably need to clay your car every few months.

Re: rail dust

I also have a white 05 Z71 Tahoe that has orange specks on the back side, the side doors and above the wheel well. I noticed the other day that my rear bumper is starting to rust on the bottom. There are also tiny bubbles starting to form under the paint, around the license plate area.

Not sure what to do, I have my car detailed a few times a year and have it washed about every other week. My car only has 37,000 miles....please let me know if you have found out any more information from GM.

Re: rail dust

I could understand if the truck was brand new and you had rail dust. The dealer should remove it.The dealer allready removed what they said was rail dust.If they removed and it came back how is it rail dust?Rail dust is from train wheels when transporting.Rail dust does not just come back. The truck is also 3 years old.Was there rail dust on the truck when it was new?

Where are you seeing it? I have yet to see anything like that on mine. I have plenty of sap that won't come off () but thats on the hood, roof, and top of the sides.
