My 2004 Monte has been babied and has just hit 20,000 miles (it is garaged in the winter and the G Caravan gets almost all of the abuse) and I have just been told by the dealer that the power steering unit is leaking. Actually, it went into the dealership since the car had an oil change at 19.8K miles and the filter was leaking (says a lot). Looking on the driveway, I noticed a spot and got down and felt around on the driver's side noting the fluid on the cross member. This is a disappointment since the low mileage (means the GM parts fail while the car sits in the garage). It is also another nail when discussing relaibility since the gauge cluster failed at 14K.
With only a 1 year warranty (which really only certifies thatthe tech installed the part correctly), this points to a 2,000 mile warranty. $800 is not a drop in the bucket for a possible temporary fix since the new is probably a re-manufactured unit). Nice car and looks showroom clean but reliability is not a selling point.
When I asked if the leak could be a line or a connection, I was told that the entire unit must be replaced. Since I paid for the examination, I asked if the fluid level was checked and fluid added (sinc it has a leak, it should be low). I got that deer int he headlights look.
Now, I am in that "what to do" phase.
