I have had the following cars with the 3.8 with 0 problems with the intake or the 3.8 engine....95 Olds, 96 Pontiac, 98 Monte Carlo Z-34 and 00 Impala. If GM still put the 3.8 in the new Impala I would have bought one this year.....I bought a Malibu with the 3.5 and really miss the gas milage of the 3.8.....

If it's broke, fix it. Search Bonneville Club, as it has been discussed a lot. Did you check with your dealer? They've sometimes been replaced out of warranty.

While it is a weak point on the 3800SII, not enough are breaking for GM to recall them. Mine has 107k on it with no problems *knock on wood* so I hope it will continue to not have problems, as I know 107k isnt exactly very many miles.

Sounds like you need these new gaskets. Not too expensive.

why the hell would you want a recall on something like this.

1. they are going to rape you for recall time.
2. there are so many out there you wont have any other work than these
3. the idea of a recall for failures is insane. only if its an safety issue will they recall it.
4. it is a maintenance item like a water pump.

the problem with the intakes on the 3.8 is not like the 3.1. its by the throttle body. most of the time. coolant leaks into it and gets sucked into the engine.

also the new series 3 is an aluminum plenum. amongst other things.

sorry to go on a rant like this but its been a rough day.

I take it your a tech? How do you like "stroking the shaft" now for .2 instead of the lube kit for .6?

Smile Re: help!!!!

yeah its nice. rather hilarious. easier though. you dont have to go get the parts, if you have them in stock, you dont have to remove it from the vehicle.
which sometimes you had to in some situations. you dont have to mess with that u shaped clip, and i dont have to spend 10 minutes trying my ass off to squeeze the steering shaft together. much easier.
i think .2 is ok. it really takes that much time. which is respectable for warranty time. all you do is remove 1 bolt seperate the shaft and stroke it a few times. 6 total i bleieve. i do 10 for good measure. lol.

gm's answer to the steering shaft problems. stroke the shaft several times.

what do you do? you a tech or advisor, or what?
