Unhappy

I am wondering if anyone else has had a problem with the 5 spoke steel wheels that have the vinyl silver 5 spoke wheel cover over them. We have a 2008 Pontiac G6.
My daughter has had to pay $175.00 to the dealer to replace one of these wheels which they said was not defective but must have come from hitting a pothole. The car has only 5,000 miles on it. We live in Buffalo, NY, there is going to be potholes! She does her best to dodge them without causing an accident, but occasionally eveyone hits one. Now a second wheel, different side of car, is losing air and apparently may also be dented per dealer. They said they get one of these problems in their shop everyday!! My question is; if you get one of these in once a day, don't you think these wheels just aren't strong enough to handle the roads in New York State? Hence, wouldn't it be the dealer/manufacturer's responsibility for putting inferior wheels on the car to begin with?? I don't anyone else with any other vehicle having this happen.

As opposed to New York, for not fixing the roads?

45K miles on my 2006 G6 coupe and drive in Mass and have had no problems at all with my wheels and Mass is pot hole heaven as well. She must be hitting them pretty hard.

Re: G6 wheel dents

Those wheels are steel. Unless they're severely bent, there's no reason to replace the whole wheel for a little bend in the lip. Just get the tire dismounted and bang it straight with a big hammer. You can't do this with cast aluminum wheels (they'll crack) but you can with steel ones. Be sure your tire pressure isn't low. If you live in an area with rough roads, you might want to set it a few pounds higher than recommended (but of course, not higher than the max pressure on the tire sidewall). The tire is what protects the rim from impacts, and if it's got low pressure, it won't do that.

Re: Pontiac G6 Dented Wheels

No one's wheels are strong enough to handle the potholes in New York State.

That's New York State's problem, not Pontiac's.

If you don't trust the dealer's diagnosis, take the car to an independent.

Re: Pontiac G6 Dented Wheels

OMG, how is this Pontiacs fault?

Do you drive with your daughter every second of the day? How do you know she avoids potholes? My wife curbs our wheels on our cars all the time. I have to constantly stay on her to not do it. If now a second wheel is bent or damaged, there is a bigger problem. Like someone likes to do 40 mph over speed bumps and curbs.

It is your daughter, not the car.

It does not matter how many miles it has on it or how strong the wheels are. If you smash them into something, they will be damaged.

Go buy a honda or toyota, I hear they have the best wheels in the industry.

Re: Pontiac G6 Dented Wheels

If your daughter hit a deer with the car - should Pontiac pay to repair it?

Where I live (SW Ohio) - deer get hit all the time and the car manufacturers know it....

You may want to talk to your insurance agent - the damage may be covered under your comprehensive vehicle coverage.

Good luck.
