Cobalt Misfire/Warranty issue

Hi,
My 06 cobalt msifires, and the engine compartment smells of gas. The car is under warranty but the dealer can't duplicate the misfire when they drive it. The dealer also tells me they can't look at the fuel injectors without the check engine light coming on. Is this true? If a GM certified mechanic can't look at the injectors, who can?

I suspect the injectors because of the recall for them, as my car falls within the vin breakpoints, as dicussed here: http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/a...p?t-43966.html

I've had to bring the car in like 4 times for this now, and it's about time for me to call my lawyer.

if your car is misfiring it should leave some type of codes in the computer to check.you also might try another service dept first, it would be alot cheaper than a lawyer.

Tell The service manager that you want to talk with the Area Service Manager (AVM, area vehicle manager). You should have better luck dealing with him rather than just the service manager at the dealership. Also cheaper than lawyers.

Re: Cobalt Misfire/Warranty issue

Its hard to justify tearing into the vehicle without any evidence of a problem. Without a check engine light or some other symptom, like gas smell, there isn't anything to back up a claim, and if they don't find anything GM wont reimburse the labor charges. As far as the recall goes, it specifically states that not all vehicles within the VIN range are part of it. They know exactly which cars are equipped with the injectors in question. If you didn't receive a recall notice, or if your dealer checked you VIN on VIS and it doesn't show up there, then it doesn't apply.

I'm not saying I don't believe you have a problem, but a lot of times people get there hands on bulletins or recall info and assume it applies to their vehicle, then start imagining all sorts of problems. But if you really and truly have an issue you need to decide how bad you want it fixed. You need to be ready to leave it with the dealer for as long as it takes to duplicate the problem. A lawyer isn't going to make your car act up, or force a dealer to do work on a car with no symptoms, and I don't see it being any different at another dealer.

One thing that people beat around the bush on is that people come to work every day to make a living, and no one is going to get into a car that they cant verify a problem with, then spend hours on it and get nothing for their time. The very first part of any diagnostic repair chart asks if the condition is present or can it be duplicated. If not you stop right there. Again if you leave it with them maybe something will happen, but if you go in on your lunch break, or right before a doctors appointment and nothing is happening, what do you expect them to do?

GM is responsible for fixing cars that are broken, and if they can get it to act up it will be fixed. But GM/dealers cannot control what happens in your life, although most of the time the dealer will go to great lengths to accomodate a customer, assuming there is reason to do so.
