Can't find a 1996 chevy lumina shift cable!

My son has a automatic on the floor. The shift cable broke and our mechanic told him you can't buy these anymore. The only way to get one is at a junk yard. Is this true? He's had no luck yet finding one at a junk yard. Does anyone no where I can find one?

Thanks, Steve

a good junk can source you one from another yard, they should have an inventory of yards that they do business with.

Re: Can't find a 1996 chevy lumina shift cable!

If it is a 3.1L floor shift the part number is 12553933 and shows to be around $90.

If its a 3.4L DOHC the part # is 12554970 but does not show to be a good number which could mean its no longer produced.

Where are you GMCSonoma??!!

GMCSonoma is away from the phone right now....

12554970 is discontinued September 2006, no PDC or delaer stock.

I would suggest "trying" the 12553933 and see if that will work...

The shifters are the same, and the shift shaft seem to be, as well as the park neutral switch...
My concern is that the 3.4 cable might be longer to accomodate the twist around that big engine...

If worse comes to worse, a company like Lokar will make one, but that will cost you..... I personally would look for a used cable.
