It broke down and he's MAD!!!

Yep, my brother who practices law and does a lot of driving had his 1989 Corvette entered in a certain 300,000+ mile club among Vette enthusiasts. In any event, the idea was to brag about your Vette once it reached this mileage level.

The transmission in my brother's car finally had to be brought into dealership service for an overhaul at the 295,000 mile mark and he is stark-raving mad. Not at the Corvette--the transmission problem with the Vette was the first problem he had with it outside of routine maintinance, and he loves the car dearly--he's mad at the fact that he can't enter the Vette in this high-mileage group without saying the car has been completely trouble-free.

Nah, that's reserved for folks who own foreign.

Like my brother-in-law the other day on his Mercedes:

B-in-L: My Mercedes has never had a problem.

B-in-L daughter: What about ... (rattles off a slew of issues such as brakes, stalling, etc.).

B-in-L: They were no big deal.

Sigh.

Any jackass on the planet would be happy about getting 295k miles before a major breakdown.

A tuned port Vette at 295k miles without a problem? I'd call the BS police on this one. No way.

Yeah...smell kinda fishy. I doubted his Vette has been trouble free up to 295K miles. It is not grandma driving on highway everyday.

Lots of cars and trucks that I know off that has made to the 300K miles club have had plenty of issue. None has been totally trouble free.

I have never owned a Vette myself, so I can't speak for my bro. As far as I know he was more or less always driving the car, and he does take great care of it, so I have no reason to doubt him.
This car has a digital speedometer. There was time when that display would flicker or not turn on altogether, but he alledgedy fixed it by slapping the top of the dasboard and said it worked fine after that.

The car has GM's Chevy small block engine mated to an automatic transmission (turbo hydramatic). In light of the bulletproofness of that combo, I can easily see how he got so many miles out of the car.

It's more believable on a tuned port vette than a cross-fire vette.

That's for sure. Still I'd expect ball joints, tie rod ends, steering rack, multec fuel injectors, alternator and belt tensioners, just to start with.

Good point. At 300k miles I guess any part or assembly on the car could be replaced and considered "normal maintenance." But there is maintenance and there are repairs. And we hear claims all the time of these high mileage cars/trucks going that long without repairs other than the routine fluids/belts/hoses/filters being changed. Consider my brother had an 81 diesel Chevette, 288k miles without any repairs other than two wheels replaced due to runout. Finally gave the car to a neighbor when the clutch started slipping.
