2005 Uplander steering issue

Anyone have an issue with the Uplander where there is like 3-4degrees of of turning in the wheel left and right before the front wheels turn. I can drive the van in a straight line and turn the wheel side to side without taking it off center. It just started doing in and I only have 23,000 miles on it. In it goes for repair on Monday.

Dude.....................shhhhhhh! Everytime an Uplander/Terraza/SV6 has any type of problem people say things like this, this is just your regular ol' could happen to any kind of car problem, has nothing to do with being an Uplander.

Anyway, I would guess tie rods, either inner or outer. But that hasnt changed much over the years so it's not like its specific to that vehicle. Hope it gets fixed as thats obviously not safe.

Re: 2005 Uplander steering issue

I had my wife turn the steering wheel side to side until she felt the end of the play and nothing moved on the rack, inner and outer tie rods didn't try to move. Next I went inside and I could feel the steering column near the floor turning at the same rate as the steering wheel so I am guessing the rack has play in it. Though if you rest your hand on the tire and turn the wheel slightly back and forth the within the play you can feel a slight knock resonate through.

I wouldnt be too suprised if it needed a rack, we have replaced a few of those over the years for issues such as those. Let us know what they do.

Well it's in now being looked at. The foreman couldn't feel the problem too much but is keeping for the day to go over the front end.

Re: 2005 Uplander steering issue

I ended up having to go out of town so my wife picks it up Friday and they tell her it all fine no problems found. I get home this morning so I take it for a drive, seems worse now and there is a knock when you turn the wheel left to right or right to left.

So I start hunting around feeling things for play and low and behold when I grab the sterring shaft inside the rubber boot that's inside the car I can push pull and left and right the shaft, it clunks everytime I move it. When I hold the shaft and turn the wheel you can feel the shaft shift forward or backward depending on which way it's turned. The joint that connects the upper shaft to the lower shaft is probably shot.

Back it goes tomorrow.

That's why I am hesitant to bring my truck in for the chatter in my dash at high speeds. I am afraid that they'll take my dash apart and it will be worse than before.
