Unhappy 2005 suburban wind noise

My 2005 Suburban has a wind noise since new in the windshield/dash area. The windshield has been resealed and multiple attempts have been made by the Chevrolet dealer to find the source of this noise. This noise is very annoying. The noise is almost like the defroster on high blow, but not that source. This noise is directly proportional to the speed of the vehicle. This noise also happens on other people's suburbans or tahoes. Does anybody have a fix for this?

Do you have a bug deflector on it?

Re: 2005 suburban wind noise

I just installed a bug deflector, hoping it would fix the noise, but it was no help. I now have 28,000 miles of trying to hear my wife's conversation and louder than normal radio listening. This noise seems to be injected into the cabin through the firewall or somewhere in that neighborhood. With the millions of these vehicles made, surely somebody at GM has a fix for this problem. I just need to know who to talk to.

Re: 2005 suburban wind noise

If it had the noise when it didn't have the deflector on it, I was going to suggest removing it and trying that. One other suggestion I have, and this sounds kinda goofy, but if you have the crossbars on the luggage rack try moving the rear one all the way back and the front one back so it's closer to the rear of the vehicle than the front(so it's on the rear half of the roof.) This was a bulletin for some wind noise in the late 90's and we've found it still sometimes holds true today.

No luggage rack crossbars, but good idea. The GM boys have spent half a dozen different days plugging holes and taping off different areas, but no luck. Somebody has the fix, but who?

Have you ever considered the fact that the noise is normal?Obviously without personally driving your vehicle it is hard to determine if the noise is normal or not.Maybe nobody can fix it because it is a normal characteristic of your truck.Have the techs that have worked on your truck test driven another Suburban to compare your truck to another vehicle?Windnoises are sometimes very difficult to diagnose.Good luck though.

This is my biggest pet peeve of GM. I hate their lack of improvements when they have a long running production on a vehicle. As a 2005 model, this truck should be about perfect. After 6 yrs of production, why is this truck making those noises. When I hit 70 in my Silverado, the A pillar plastic rattles against my windshield, almost sounding like a window is cracked. WHY? At low speeds, my dash creaks. It is very irritating and is unacceptable.

Re: 2005 suburban wind noise

This is the 2nd 2005 suburban I have owned. The first one did not have this nasty air noise. When my wife drove this suburban home from the dealer lot, new, she thought the passenger door must not be latched or the passenger window was not up. The noise was that noticable. When sitting in the passenger seat, the noise sounds as though it is coming from the drivers side. The noise comes from inside the dash area. It does not matter if the heater or defrost or vent is on or off. The noise is all the same. We just have not been able to pinpoint this air rush noise.

If there is a problem with the heater box, would it make noise as described above? What would a guy look for?

Does the noise change if you switch the HVAC cntrls from recirculate to fresh air? Also when you are able to duplicate the noise shut of the truck and let it coast.See if the noise changes at all.Does the noise increase with road speed?Wind noises are sometimes very difficult to pinpoint. You could also use white masking tape and cover the gaps between the fenders/doors etc.. to try and pinpoint the noise.

i have seen our mechanics chase noises for weeks, tearing everything in the world apart and sometimes wind up finding it could be something wrong mechanically, either in the trans, 4x4,instrument cluster, crack in plastic, vacuum line etc. if it were something simple it would be fixed by now. good luck though.

Re: 2005 suburban wind noise

Just a suggestion:

I have a 2003 Dodge Durango with rear ac/heat - it has a seperate blower in the rear. When the rear blower is running on medium or high speed with all the windows up, it sounds like a window is slightly lowered and there is an air leak.

I bought it new and thought there was an air leak or wind noise until I realized one day the noise went away when I turned off the rear blower (there are separate controls for the front and rear blower motor).

It can be hard to locate the source of noises inside a vehicle and they can seem to come from different areas than the real source.

I hope this helps.
