India: MUL's first fully Indigenous car may arrive by ’07

![]() AHMEDABAD: Maruti Udyog, the country’s largest car-maker, may not roll out its first fully indigenous car by ’07. MUL managing director Jagdish Khattar indicated that the company may take some more time to introduce a fully-indigenous car. “We are working on it but it may take some more time,” Mr Khattar told ET. However, he was quick to add that work in that direction was going on. “The intention to develop an indigenous car is very much there and we our team is putting in its best to deliver. Our engineers have already introduced changes in Zen, Esteem and WagonR models. There is a marked change in the situation as compared to what it was five years ago. Designing Swift in Japan by our own people was another significant achievement,” said Mr Khattar. The company, while going for its IPO, had said the new car will be developed by the company’s research and development department and will be ready in the next three years. Indians are very good copy cats.. it will be just like China.. a GM car with an indian name and terrible safety standards
