Hyundai, Kia unions strike against U.S. trade pact

Hyundai, Kia unions strike against U.S. trade pact

SEOUL (Reuters) -- Unionized workers at Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's top automaker, and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. today launched a four-hour strike in protest against a U.S./South Korea free trade pact.

Hyundai and Kia workers plan a further six-hour strike on Friday, said union officials from both companies. Kia's union members voted for another strike plan for next week to seek higher wages and better working conditions.

Hyundai and Kia said production would resume from Monday.

Interesting...so it appears that nobody likes this deal - US or Koreans. Why are we doing it again? Oh yeah, because the companies like it...not the workers on either side of the Pacific:

Korea wins in trade deal

South Korean automakers are the big winners in the proposed free trade agreement announced by U.S. and Korean negotiators April 1. And two Detroit automakers have expressed displeasure.

The agreement still needs to be approved by Congress and Korea's National Assembly. If it is, Korean manufacturers Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. will have more open access to the United States than other major overseas automakers.

Good for them. I hope all USA unions strike until NAFTA dies a horrible death.
