Hyundai to build engine plant in US

Quote:
Hyundai announced today its intention to build a new engine plant in the U.S. at its current lone production facility in Montgomery, Alabama. The new facility will cost Hyundai around $270 million and add an additional 520 jobs to the plant. Engines produced at the new facility, which will break ground in September 2008, will supply not only Hyundai's Alabama plant, but also Kia's new plant in Georgia.

Re: Hyundai to build engine plant in US

Does this mean we'll be seeing actual Hyundai engines, and not just altered Mitsu ones?

Here is an idea: instead of buying engines from the Chi-coms, GM can get Equinox engines from this factory.

Shabodah, Hyundai has been using all-Hyundai engines for more than 10 years. It's 2007, buddy

Before the 2000-2002 Renaissance at Hyundai the old Accents still used the Mitsu 1.5 and even current engines are very similar to current mitsu engines with the biggest difference being the compression ratio(3.8 V6s)

The new 2.4 is a a shared engine co developed and used by Mitsu and Chrysler....but I have yet to see it be used in a Mitsu

Actually the 3.8L shortblock is the same in both the Hyundai and the Mitsu (work at Mitsu dealer, father-in-law is a Hyundai guy).

The 2.4L "World Engine" is the same block with a different stroke in the '08 Mitsu Lancer and upcoming Evo X.

The real question I've always had with Hyundai is "How do you take someone else's design, revise it, and get worse power AND worse fuel economy?!?!?"

The 3.8 Mitsubishi V6s are SOHC iron block.

The 3.8 Hyundai engines are DOHC aluminum block.

How is that similar?

You know Mitsu makes (made) a DOHC 3.0L and a SOHC 3.0L and BOTH were based on the same shortblock, right?!?

No one was arguing that the heads and valvetrain were the same, and Mitsu has had both basic designs available for a while....

The aluminum block itself is just being phased in by Mitsu.

The Mitsubishi is iron block, SOHC, 3828 ccs, 3.74x3.54 bore and stroke, 10.0 compression.

The Hyundai is aluminum block, DOHC, 3778 ccs, 3.78x3.43 bore and stroke, 10.4 compression. Hyundai's 3.3 and 3.8 liter V6s are part of what they call their "Lambda" engine family, and some of their press releases seem to claim it's an entirely in-house design.

How closely related can those engines be? Different bore and stroke, different displacement, different material, different valves. Do you have any evidence that it's a Mitsubishi design?
