Hybrid owner sues Honda over mileage claims

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...707060350/1148
Snip...
The lawsuit claims American Honda Motor Co. has misled consumers in its advertisements and on its Web site. The suit notes that while the Environmental Protection Agency and automobile window stickers say "mileage will vary," some Honda advertisements read "mileage mayvary." That implies that it's possible to get the mileage advertised, said William H. Anderson, a Washington, D.C., attorney for True.

One Honda magazine ad claimed owners could get up to 650 miles on a single tank of gas, while Honda's Web site features a fuel-savings calculator that assumes hybrid Civic drivers will average 51 mpg.

"This case does seek relief for tens of thousands of consumers like Mr. True, who purchased the HCH expecting to benefit from its 'remarkable' fuel efficiency, and paid thousands of dollars extra for an HCH that looks identical and performs basically the same as the non-hybrid Honda Civic," said a June 4 court filing.

Those are the EPA numbers. I guess we should all get on board and sue the automakers. People just expect cars to get good fuel economy. But you have to be careful with your driving habits. The toyota prius had the same compaints while other people seem very satisfied with the mialage.

What an idiot. He might as well not even waste his time, because this is going to get thrown out without him getting a penny.

And I bet if it ever did go to trial, Honda could come up with a scenario somewhere that someone did get the EPA mileage numbers, with a light foot, no traffic, and keeping speeds below 55.

Re: Hybrid owner sues Honda over mileage claims

Why just hybrids? Lets all start suing every car manufacturer for every car that they sell not meeting its mileage ratings.

Let's get everyone together and sue the automotive industry just because we can. That'll help!

Re: Hybrid owner sues Honda over mileage claims

Personally I think it's ridiculous to sue based on mileage "claims." I've seen people get well over EPA mileage. It's happened to me with several cars, and then I've had people that cant seem to get good mileage no matter what they do. I remember a customer getting over 55 MPG with an Aveo with no modifications.

I get well over the EPA in both my 'Balts... The stick easily gets 38-40 on the highway. Cruise set at 72.

No...it's not these "hybrid customers," it's "the new American way." Make a fast buck by suing someone who hasn't done anything wrong. Honda designed a car that does well in the EPA-designed test and Honda followed the law by only advertising gas mileage claims from that test. Honda has done nothing wrong here.

The Civic buyer and his lawyer are morons looking for money from a large corporation. It's not about his gas mileage or the fact that his Civic looks and performs just like any other Civic (isn't that the point of a Civic Hybrid?). I'm sure I could get far better gas mileage than any standard Civic if I had his Hybrid for a week. Heck, I get better gas mileage in my standard cars than I'm supposed to according to the EPA.

The world would be a better place if we had fewer lawyers. And soft-minded people persuaded by these lawyers to sue over stupid stuff.

I suppose no one on these forums is going to buy a GM hybrid in the future?

Doesn't he know you're supposed to coast with the car turned off and draft semis on the highway?
