How many Americans do Japanese companies employ?

Just curious. How many American factory workers and managers are employed by the Japanese car companies. For that matter, how many Americans do GM, Ford and Chrysler employ?

Re: How many Americans do Japanese companies employ?

According to Automotive News (April 25, 2005), the Big3 employ 389,758 (down 130,000 since 2000) in North America ("all automoitve-related departments" in North America). Non-Big3 companies (including non-Japanese car companies, but apparently not including Honda of Mexico, Hyundai, Subaru, and Mercedes-Benz) currently employ 115,828 (up 27,183 since 2000).

They have a further breakdown by company, but not factory workers exclusively.

Down 130K in the US since 2000, but up only 27K from foreign bosses since 2000. Looks like more jobs are going overseas ------ its not just your GM boss getting replaced by your Toyota boss.

It might look that way, but it's not. Factories are getting more efficient and less labor-intensive. And the Big3 have pared off some of their parts factories, further reducing the numbers of Big3 employees by shifting them to outside suppliers (most of which are in North America).
