Honda CEO Aims to Help Boost U.S. Economy

TOKYO (AP) -- The head of Japan's Honda Motor Co. said Thursday his company aims to keep production levels high in the United States and purchase more parts in the U.S. to help support the U.S. economy and its floundering auto industry.

Honda President and Chief Executive Takeo Fukui said such measures were preferable to raising prices on Japanese cars.

Honda currently produces about 80 percent of its vehicles for the American market in the U.S. and buys as much as 98 percent of auto parts needed for its U.S.-market cars from local suppliers, Fukui said.

Japanese officials have been considering ways to help the U.S. auto industry as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. watch their U.S. market share become sharply eroded by Asian rivals, including Honda and Toyota Motor Corp.

How the hell is that going to help domestics?

Toyota is doing the same thing. Raising prices, making cars in the US. So how is Honda rescuing us? From the job loss?

Once again, another fluff piece that is only trying to give Honda some good PR while at the same time kicking sand in the eyes of GM and Ford. How will this help the domestics at all? It will just give give Honda a reason to reinforce the perception that they are more American than Ford or GM because they are using American made parts. Notice how they throw in the figures on how many Honda cars are produced here in the US? This article's intent was to spotlight Detroit's woes even further while making Honda look like a 'good guy' that just wants to help out...nothing but PR fluff.
