Edmunds: Toyota Camry Hybrid To Be Made In USA

TOKYO — Toyota will begin making hybrid versions of its best-selling Camry sedan at its Georgetown, Kentucky, auto plant in mid-2006, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The gasoline-electric Camry would be built in the same U.S. plant that makes conventional Camrys. Toyota sold about 427,000 Camrys in the U.S. in 2004, making it America's top-selling car for the third consecutive year. The Japanese automaker plans a major Camry redesign in 2006.

The Japanese economic newspaper also reported that Toyota indicated it might begin producing other hybrid models such as its popular Prius in the U.S. in 2007.

What this means to you: This could mean the end of waiting lists for some Toyota hybrids. Or it could mean the beginning of another waiting list for yet another Toyota hybrid. Either way, it means trouble for manufacturers caught napping on the hybrid trend.

If I recall, it will be a mild hybrid. I forgot the date that this product would be released.
