Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

If This Isn't the Best, What Is?
With few exceptions, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 appears to be the best all-around eight-passenger SUV available. Its roots may go back to the truck-based sport-utility vehicle, but the 2008 Toyota Sequoia has all the comfort and conveniences of a minivan and it doesn't drive like a truck. This is a huge step forward in SUV evolution.

Sure, this test truck wears a $56,000 price tag, so it will leave some people wondering why it doesn't wear a Lexus badge, and indeed maybe it should. If that's the case, keep in mind that $24,000 separates a base SR5 2WD, at just under $35,000, and the fully optioned Platinum for $58,795.

There are a lot of rings in the Sequoia's profile, with a thick stack of 2WD and 4WD options to suit many needs and budgets. But in any form, this truck stands tall among the current crop of full-size SUV offerings.
Link

As far as Edmunds is concerned, this truck is better than Navigator EL, Escalade, Mercedes GL, GMC Yukon XL, Tahoe, Suburban.. etc...

I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole

Surely, if this was an Expendation or Suburban or GMC Yukon XL, there would be a skeptic tone from the editor.
I have no doubt this is a good SUV, but given the trouble Toyota is having with the Tundra and the way I have seen the Tundra bed shake on the 405 freeway (go over to you tube) I doubt Toyota has caught up to the Expendation and Tahoes of this world just yet. The Toyota Frame is cleary inferior to GM, Chrysler and Ford.

As for 0-60, something is not right... a lighter more powerful Super Charged Range Rover is slower than this beast?
What about the New GM Hybrids? This is better than those too? Better than a Fully Loaded 403 HP 400 Lb's of TQ GM smooth 6 speed, Platinum Escalade ESV with all its soft leather, bells and whistles and tomb like quiet cabin??

Clearly this editor knows his audience. Tell them what they want to hear

Re: Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

I find the new Sequoia very attractive, and if I were in the market for this class of vehicle, it'd likely top my buyer's list.

I always thought the GMT900s looked dumpy and outdated, though not outright ugly. Same could be said for the meh-on-wheels Expedition. Style-wise, the Sequoia blows 'em away. I don't care for that cheap-looking instrument surround though. The GMT900s have it easily beat in the dashboard department. And I doubt my short little arms could begin to reach that (off-)center stack.

However that iffy Tundra V-8 under the hood might be cause for alarm...

  1. Tahoe for 2008 is offering the Denali 6.2 V8 with 380 HP and 417 ft-lbs. of torque
  2. you mean to tell me to you this thing looks better than this?

Man look at that Tahoe..

Now if CR recommends it by conveniently forgetting that it has the same frame, engine, and transmission as the Tundra, then we can really call bias.

Re: Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

Edmunds LOVES anything that burns rice as long as it has a
toyo/honda badge on it !!!!!!!!!!!!
Anything that is from GM/Ford/Mopar is JUNK to them...............

Just read their glowing comments on the long term ridgeline
test! No matter the 4 blown out struts from driving down a
washboard rutted road or other issues !
Its the best thing since sliced bread to them!
Of course its poor sales say otherwise.......................

TAHOE is way better looking IMO. This current generation of GM SUVs is the first that I find myself staring at while in traffic.

I can believe that 0-60 time. The Tundra can do 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. Land Rovers are shaped like bricks, as well.

Re: Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

i'm not surprised.

Clearly the Tahoe/Yukon is THE best Full Size non-Luxury SUV on the market, anyone who says otherwise,...might want to get past the 5th grade in elementary school.

that ugly pos that the sequoia is, is embarrassing. I hope people use at least half of their brain before they purchase that piece of junk, though, when it fails on them, we can all laugh here on GMI.

PS: trex, i'm surprised at you. are you sure one of your kids didn't sign on to your gmi?

Our Sequoia Limited 4x4 (which runs on 87-octane fuel) earned a combined average of 14 mpg, backing up the EPA's official rating of 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway.
Thats all that is mentioned about fuel comsuption. Hell, if this had been the Tahoe, we would have seen at least half a page.

On a side note, the Sequoia gots a fully boxed frame. If it didn't it wouldn't ride like a Lexus.

Re: Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

why would they only box the sequoias frame and not go ahead and do it to the tundra as well?

Re: Edmunds Drools Over New Sequoia.

Edmunds reviews are all about the driving experience.

It has a fully boxed frame, unlike the Tundra, so it probably rides better than the Tundra.

They like the steering - and unless one of us has driven it, we have no grounds for comparison.

It's also incredibly quick for its size, even faster than the Escalade and Yukon Denali - the Tundra also outruns the Sierra Denali, so this is no surprise either.

Viola, the Sequoia is their new favorite. It's not surprising at all.
