The Boy's "New Car"...

A 2000 Mazda Protege LX...
Not bad for a FREE car from my sister and her Husband.
55+K original miles on it. 1.6 L engine. CD player, crank style adjustable driver's seat. Keyless entry, real good gas mileage.

Interior...

From the back seat...

Rear...

Very good trunk space...

All in all you cannot beat a free car. No matter what it is. My Sister's Husband's daughter had this car before my son.
She abused the paint on it. Many scratches all over it.
She tried to put a kayak on it and scratched the roof line.
Mechanically it is pretty sound.
I would like to have a Motor Vac done to it at some point.

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

It is exactly like my wife's car- color, year, everything. That car will be perfect for him. Great gas mileage! We've haven't had a problem with it yet! Just make sure if he cares about the paint that he waxes it. Our paint is getting a little junky. IDK if it's just the age or what, but it feels like sandpaper on the decklid, roof, and hood.

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

Yes...I was explaining to my son to have it Buffed Out to see if that will clean it up some. I also told him very strongly NOT to use a Quickie Lube. If he has too then take it to a Mazda dealer or better yet find a reliable Auto Shop locally in the Chicago Area. I am going to show him (and do it for him) how to properly clean his windows and then Rain-X them. I also have an extra Analog Tire Gauge to give him.

Go to your local auto parts store, go to the section with all the car wash stuff and pick up some car clay.
Here's some directions on how to use it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfEfL...elated&search=
It applies for any brand of clay, whatever is availabe.

Anywas, congrats on the Protege. Always loved those cars.

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

It's a great car. As reliable as any Corolla or Civic but so much cheaper as a used buy.

Plus, it drives very well with nice handling. The steering feel especially is very nice and much better than many expensive cars I've driven.

Thanks for the info but, I don't even do that to my own cars. I rather pay to have it fully detailed then to sweat my buttocks off doing that. It is pretty well scratched up and I was thinking "maybe" it can be buffed out some. However, I doubt it will fix all of it. It is really bad in spots.

My main concern is that it will be sound mechanically for him. He lives in Lincoln Park, Chicago. Otherwise I nick-named it Dent City. If you do not have a car port at least then you will get some dents from people parking. No way around it. I like to walk down the streets there an scope out the vehicles missing their side mirrors from idiot drivers. I just wish he had a few days here so I can have my friend at Denny's Auto look it over.

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

Free is always good. When I got stuff free I never complained. I really didn't want a Malibu in 2004, but my parents said I had limited choices (That or a Grand Am basically). Didn't want another GA so the Bu was it. Never complained about the car.

Mine? That is the northwest side of Lansing. A lot of double lots in a forest of trees. When I Google Map our house you cannot see the house and barely see the streets. I always wanted to "see" what cars are in the drive way to figure out when they took the satellite pics...

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

You can tell GoogleEarth images are old, because the houses in my 'hood still have all the Katrina tarps on them. Whole Foods Grocery is the big building lower right, where I walk almost daily to buy my groceries.

Hope junior enjoys his new car! That was a better deal than a penny postcard!

Re: The Boy's "New Car"...

When it comes to cars, usually the only thing that is free are the dents and scratches people donate to it.

But a free car, and it looks in good shape. That is a good deal.

Speedo goes to 140 mph! Those folks at Mazda are sure optimistic. Good car for a kid, especially at the price. But it's getting him an early start on imports, maybe not the best thing?
