Bland Ambition (06 Camry review)

http://www.suntimes.com/output/auto/car-news-car19.html

Finally someone in the automotive media tells the truth about this car that is nothing spectacular. Good review, nice to see the truth for once.

Quote:
The mid-size Toyota Camry is the top-selling car in America, but a 2006 model I tested reminded me of a 1980s mid-range General Motors sedan -- without Toyota's refinement.

Like an old GM Chevrolet, Oldsmobile or Buick, the Camry had imprecise steering, a soft suspension that provided a smooth ride but average handling and a mushy brake pedal.

The Camry is for dispassionate auto buyers who just want reliable, economical transportation. Driving the car seems like an alternative to taking a bus or train.

"With the Camry, Toyota may have perfected the family car,'' Toyota says.

Let's hope not.

Cars such as the new Ford Fusion cost less, are just as practical and are far more fun to drive.

Re: Bland Ambition (06 Camry review)

Of course it's bland... but inoffensive, soft-riding, nicely built, reliable sedans are what people want. Toyota gives people (car enthusiasts excluded) what they like and do it properly. Car enthusiasts can bi7ch all they want about how bland and unsporty the Camry is, but that doesn't change the fact that the whole Camry package itself is what A LOT of people are looking for. The Camry was made to be sold to the biggest group of buyers, not the minority who wants a Japanese BMW.

"The Camry lacks emotion and is being sold in a short model year with the redesigned version on deck. But it has best-seller status, legendary quality and high resale value.

For many folks, that's apparently more than enough.
"

The conclusion says it all.

Re: Bland Ambition (06 Camry review)

This review is a lie. "Toyota calls the Camry sedan a six-seater, but only five tall adults fit comfortably because the middle of the rear seat is hard. Wide door openings make it easy to slip " Toyota doesn't call the Camry a six-seater.

This is probably made from the same guy who did the Highlander Hybrid/Avalon review earlier this year. I proved that the Highlander one was false, so this probably is, too.

I knew you were going to agree with this! Me too, I rather drive a Fusion than a Camry anyday.

Ditto. I've never liked them. Don't intend on ever buying one. But I don't represent the greater market this will appeal to.

Exactly, yet this guy says Toyota calls it a six-seater? I'm taking this review with a grain of salt.

This article could have said the same thing and drawn the same reasonable conclusion without a slight toward GM. It may be true, but really, let it go.

This article is balanced, I suppose, with reasonable praise and criticism.

Re: Bland Ambition (06 Camry review)

sad. It took everyone else until 2006 to beat the camry. "ill take a fusion over a camry"
"sonata gives more for far less"
"impala is much better then the camry"

Thats why its a benchmark people.

Re: Bland Ambition (06 Camry review)

I don't think that the Camry can hold on to its title for long. The Fusion, Aura and Sonata are really great cars. They will be chipping away at it.
