The U.S. Big Three closed the gap with the Japanese vehicles on initial vehicle quality
Infiniti QX56 SUV the least reliable. The magazine relies for its rankings on reports from readers, as well as its own testers, with a record one million questionnaires received back for the new issue, compared to 675,000 a year ago.

I can see at least 5 people on this board who are going to jump on this thread and refute the claims.

You said this

The U.S. Big Three closed the gap with the Japanese vehicles on initial vehicle quality,

BUt, you forgot to mention this.

but the Japanese brands still led significantly in in durability from 2-8 years

but whatever. most people disclaim consumer reports anyway.

Exactly.

Wait wait, didn't most of you GM fans dismiss and flame CR for the latest report it released because GM didn't do so well?

Yet now, you use CR ratings in initial quality because they show domestic makers in a good light?

Hypocrites.

Of course they are ahead in 8 year quality, those tests are including 1998 Cutlasses and Luminas. Domestic vehicles are in a totally different place right now.

In any case, most quality reports are stupid and pointless.

It also indicates how committed the imports are to their products compared to the domestics.

Tough times are ahead. A brand new car is not in the cards. My new (to me) 16 year old Accord serves the purpose extremely well. And it's paid off!

Re: Big Three, Japanese Brands "Equal" on Initial Quality

I think that the Big Three had bad duarability during the 90's, so their quality ratings will definatly be down. They say that they have changed, so we got to wait 5 years to see what happens

A mute point in today's auto market. Every company regardless of origin is committed to product.

Well guess what. The vehicles GM has put out in the last 2 or 3 years can't really be judged long term can they? Or the ones they are just releasing now for that fact.

you toyota loving people do the same thing,

Just look at their reviews of cars. They only get most of the opinions from their readers( who are mainly Import people BTW) . who already buy in to their BS.

Re: Big Three, Japanese Brands "Equal" on Initial Quality

who cares anymore, the import freaks deny it, the domestic freaks try to prove otherwise, then arguing begins. I've seen it so many times it's not even funny. My view on this is buy whatever the hell you want, if you think domestics are huge pieces of crap on wheels then #1, you're out of your mind and #2 go buy your import and I hope it ends up being a huge pile so you'll realize that you'll even get a lemon in your so perfect Camry. Quality in cars today is about even in every brand and don't rule out the fact that you might have an occasional problem but that's what warranty's for or you might get a lemon, stuff happens.
