Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

I don't have the article, and I cannot scan it, but I will paraphrase/quote some stuff from the Feb. Automobile. Robert Cumberford basically thinks the Tundra is ugly and stylistically deficient in almost every respect but will probably sell based on Toyota's reputation.

"Toyota has tried, without much success, to capture a bit of the previous F-150's feminized, civilized look"

"Surely not as aerodynamic as GM's new trucks"

"Supremely bad design-a fake air scoop set into the top of the grille shell, blocked off by a textured black panel"

"Wheelhouse bulges supposed to make truck look tough, they really don't"

"Steering wheel has a definite passenger-car look, pudgy and without character. Very Toyota-like, in fact.

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE:

"Silly little kick up in the sill line simply looks like a mistake. But there are a lot of those on the Tundra"

--

Since I am not allowed to scan mags, this is the best I can do. I liked it though.

I don't like the looks either - especially the front half.

Re: Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

I checked this truck out in person a few weeks. It actually looks pretty good to me. But then again, I found the previous gen. Silverado to be one of the ugliest trucks in it's segment (compared to F150, Ram. Titan and Tundra). If you enjoy F150 and Ram styling, you'll dig the Tundra when you check it out in person.

Also the interior is pretty good. The controls are not out of reach like it looks in the photos and you can reach them easily.

Re: Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

After spending some time with a couple of them at the Houston Auto Show I have to say I'm dissapointed. The looks and 5.7L are the best aspects, but then looks are subjective. The controls on the radio are HUGE. I guess this is to make it easier to use with gloves, but it has a small knob for volume and most of the other controls are small and look like they were pulled from various Toyota products. The Regular Cab doors are rediculously large. I mean seriously.

Re: Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

I also checked this truck out at the LA auto show. It is ugly. The front is very flat, which you can't see in pictures. From some angles it looks disproportioned. The rims look like they came from a car. Yes it is big.

The interior is so badly designed I thought i was going to puke. I feel bad for people who will buy this. Some of the knobs are out of reach, I'm 5'10" so maybe a tall person won't have that issue. The color scheme is so pathetic. Why?
Overall doesn't compare on looks to GM's offerings.

LMFAO!!!!!!

THe interior outside of the huge center console extremely disappoints. the fake silver trim and black plastic (similar to sky) really does look like junk. I wasn't impressed, but since it's a toyota and they have 'the' image, it will sell unfortunately.

The Tundra will not succeed in the Marketplace.

Uh, Ford is notorious for this on the Mustang, but it has a more prominent hood scoop. I think it's worse to have a sports car with a fake air scoop.

Toyota seems serious about getting brand loyal people to jump ship.

Re: Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

The Tundra is a good effort, certainly better than the previous generation, especially power wise, and will certainly be a good alternative but the GM and Ford trucks are definitely more attractive and more user-friendly to me and come with great pricing, great powertrain and great body-type and model choices.

Re: Automobile's Robert Cumberford Criticizes Tundra's Styling

Ill also agree that the body is hidious and out of proportion. But with its body styles, I found the reg cab shortbed to look alot like a Ram in same style. So from the looks of it, I think Toyota copied more Ram than F-series in this truck. I think Toyota has a new theory here, the unglier you make a vehicle, the more it will sell.

I will admit that the new powertrain is good, but so was the Titans and overall that didnt have much impact either. So yes it will sell, but it might not be a threat.

This truck looks like a Dodge Ram that has let itself go.

But I'm not taking Toyota lightly....
