Re: AutoBlog: New "world-class" luxury sedan rolling into showrooms later this month

I think many in our group have one of the same maladies GM suffers from: myopic vision, we see only what we want to see.

Hyundai Motor Company, set out to create, design, and bring to market its first Luxury car, and it did so in record time. GM created luxury in its Buick, and Cadillac lines, and then forgot the formula. I know a lot of self made persons, which came from disadvantaged beginnings, many of them whom most of you have heard about that realized, it's not the pedigree, but it’s the motivation that made the difference. If Hyundai falls a little short this time, they have time to refine it as Lexus did. Remember it has just been 20 years, since everyone laughed at Toyota's challenge to German manufacturing, and most of those vehicles are still on the road, and their latest models, have broken the $100K selling mark. Cadillac has been around for almost 100 years, and still doesn't have a modern family sized sedan. And what Cadillac offers for $100K your friends in the know, would secretly laugh at you for purchasing.

This will sell among those around here who buy Kia sorentos and change the grills to make them look like BMWs.

can't imagine it would be too hard to make that look like a 5 series, most of the work is already done, and the grill design, from this angle anyway does make it look like a BMW at the front from a passing glance.

"look mommy! a BMW! oh wait..."

Yes. Very very very true!!
However, this is still under a Hyundai badge. It needs an entirely separate badge to get the image whores to notice it. Otherwise, it's essentially a Korean Phaeton. And Phaeton was an AMAZING car. It just isn't a VW. I had the chance to drive a Phaeton in Salzburg. Beautiful setting... Beautiful car.

It outclasses the best Cadillac sedans on every level. But it's still a VW.

And how many people can actually afford the $60-95K price tag? And how many of those people would have the patience to stand in line at the dealership next to the 19 year old girl twirling her hair and chewing bubble gum, waiting for her Beetle to get washed?

Exactly.

No matter how good Genesis is.... It will never crack that glass ceiling, so long as it wears the Hyundai badge.

I don't care if they build a car as luxurious and as fast as the Flying Spur!
So long as it wears the badge "HYUNDAI"..... it won't amount to anything.

However, the moment Hyundai wises up.... then beware.... Until then.... It really is a ho-hum moment.

Again. This is just the beginning.. They WILL create a luxury brand... They're not going to build world-class cars and badge them as Hyundai's forever... We're not talking about Cadillac here. And you have to admit - it's pretty unreal/amazing that Hyundai makes a better luxury car than Cadillac does.. I mean - which Cadillac is better? The DTS? The STS? Heh! Right.

So what if it's just the beginning?
They already made a fatal mistake by branding it a Hyundai!

I'm not saying that they won't do better in the future. I'm saying they made a fatal mistake NOW.

In fact, I'd like to ask EVERYONE that question...

Forget badges and brands for a moment - and then answer the following question:

Which Cadillac is better than the Hyundai Genesis?

As long as it's sold in a hyundai dealer it still has the reputation of a disposable car. Now what we have is an expensive disposable car.
By the way, pretty pathetic attempt at a BMW, hyundai.

Hyundai could be the new lexus just as kia could become the toyota fighter. I thought that was the plan all along?

Re: AutoBlog: New "world-class" luxury sedan rolling into showrooms later this month

I am also with everyone here that the Genesis won't win any American car buyers. Maybe a few Korean Americans who have the money and was waiting for this from the beginning, but other than that, I speculate that the first year sales for the Genesis sedans will be dismal. Also, for those of you who doesn't know(though I think most people know), Hyundai did a research, and the answers they've got in creating new, luxury marque will cost them around 2.5 billion dollars, and will take them a good 20 years to really establish themselves to turn in some real profits. I think what they are doing right now is to test the North American market by sending 1 or 2 genesis's to each dealers to see how the American buyers' feedback will be like. To see if it is plausable/worth it to spend that kinda money to begin a new brand.

I still don't think it's their smart move to sell these kinda cars to North America. It may do well in home Korea, but it's just too early to bring it into the US/Canada. Hyundai do have money, since they are the top ranked auto maker in Korea, but I can understand that they don't want to risk losing billions of dollars that have no future of bringing in any profits.

I also posted this number of times on Sal's Genesis site, but the fact that they lied about the original price(under 30K) when the concept was first introduced(If you think back, they NEVER really said anything about the powerplants, all they emphasized was over 300 HP and under 30K pricing), and rudely copying/ripping-off other luxury marques designs here and there and discarding the concepts' less derivative design, just won't make this a success.

To me, it will be lucky if it does not turn out to be like a Sonata about an year back, being sold to the rental fleets, and gaining dust in the showrooms.
