Why I don't buy Japanese - this coming from a Chinese-American
As the grandchild of Chinese immigrants and an avid enthusiast of GM and MOPAR product I will NEVER buy Japanese cars. I have my reasons for doing so which is below here and it may come across as shocking and/or hateful to some:
In 1937 when my grandmother was 8 years old the Japanese raided China killing and torturing people by the hundreds of thousands (too graphic to mention here) which she saw firsthand. Upon hearing these stories as a child and what I have read in history textbooks throughout my life I felt (and to a point still do feel) a deep sense of bitter sentiment towards the Japanese ever since. And contrary to popular belief to this day the Japanese never apologized for the atrocities they have committed even to the point of whitewashing their history books and honoring the war criminals (murderers, pedophiles, the worst of the worst) as "heroes" at the Yasukuni shrine. To me this is like them spitting in my face. Being this is the United States of America where we have more freedoms than many other countries can only dream of having, my statement in response to the Japanese atrocities is, "you killed enough of my people, you don't have the courage to admit wrongdoing, therefore I simply don't have to buy your product." Also since my grandfather is a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II we always had that sense of "buying American." After the war was over his first car bought was a Chevy Impala station wagon with a 327 c.i.d V-8. Since then as more and more of the family was immigrating from China all we bought were Chevys, my uncle even worked for General Motors in the corporate sector so his employee discounts were a huge plus. Though he started working for Chrysler years later my first car after getting my license was a Chevy Celebrity with 219,000+ miles on it. I kept that car for awhile until I wrecked it and the next car I got after that was a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport (currently with 234,400+ miles and still running strong today). Being American cars have been good to everyone in my family I also consider buying foreign as, "Why change a good thing?" In my opinion I consider it preposterous when many people claiming to be patriotic say, "I will never buy an American car." You can't have that attitude that "I'm patriotic as long as it doesn't cost me money." You're either patriotic or you're not. This not only applies to us as individuals but also to large corporations who are outsourcing more and more jobs overseas. Also in an era where patriotism drives the morale of the American people we should at the same time support the American car manufacturers be it GM, Ford, or Chrysler. I believe they make just as good a product as anyone else and as long as you maintain and take care of your car, it in turn will take care of you. At the same time it's one thing if someone does something wrong but it is a different thing entirely when that same someone said they didn't do anything wrong. The U.S. has done things we shouldn't be proud of but at the same time we don't cover it up. Even if we tried some investigative reporter will uncover it anyway, you gotta love the sensational media. |

Re: America's Best Car Company
Oh, yes indeed.
With stunted educational norms. An overwhelming balance of trade deficit. And a fast growing to near total reliance on foreign manufacturers. We should be the newest third world country any day now. Of course, rather than crudely staged American workers, perhaps some human skeleton video clips, some Battaan photos, or some shots from sunny 1941 Pearl Harbor would have been nice? Of course, those would have been far less jingoistic than that sad picture.
