I read on the VW forum that severe supply issues are to blame for the Civic's sales figures. I find that hard to believe. I think it's the styling that is to blame.

Only being down 1.7% doesn't seem like a big deal considering their low fleet sales. It seems like Honda is the opposite of Toyota - they keep the fleets very low and they aren't trying to expand as quickly. They haven't been in the news about recalls as much either. Slow and steady.

Why are we dissecting this?
We should be asking why Toyota is growing faster than Honda--which is clearly superior.

Honda is a far more diversified company than Toyota. Vehicles are just part of their mix. Honda is doing fine and the new Accord is on the way. CaChing!

Toyota is a huge company. You'll be surprised how diversified they are. They got to where they are by concentrating on high quality cars and slow, steady growth. Now all of a sudden, they can see the opportunity to become the largest car company in the world and they're making a mad push for it. If they keep it up for too long, it'll be their undoing. The Toyota of today is definitely not the Toyota of even a few years ago.

Supposedly there is enough demand out there for Honda to relocate products made at the Civic plant to others so they can make more Civics. In Canada there was a dealer markup on MSRP for 6 months (probably longer), they may still infact be marking it up.

It has to be the styling, because Honda didn't suddenly shut down a Civic plant to where supply would be an issue

I'm not sure, i think they shut down the Ohio line to make room for the CRV. And another line in Canada will be used for civics.

Remember Honda plants can build a variety of vehicle at the same time. And alternate easily.

I agree. Hondas are definately superior to Toyotas. The interiors are better. The only thing that I think is that Honda has overdesigned some of their cars -the Civic is overdone IMO, but at least it has some styling cues.
