1998-2002 V6 Accord had problems - Toronto Star Used Wheels Column

While the perception is that Honda quality is top notch, recent experience and a Used Vehicle column in the Toronto Star suggest otherwise.

Re: 1998-2002 V6 Accord had problems - Toronto Star Used Wheels Column

Hmmm...This is interesting. Warped rotors are easily fixed and are no more common on the 6thgen Accord than any other car. Never really noticed any abnormal squeaks and rattles on these cars that aren't on all cars. The transmissions are a problem. I'd bet they are less common than the GM and Ford competitors though. The good news is the over half of the cars mentioned are covered to 100k at NO cost to the customer. How many domestics do that? Wheel bearings are common, usually just the right rear though. Any of you guys ever work on W body GM's? The wheel bearings on those are pretty bad and MUCH more expensive.

Point is that while these aren't the best Accords ever built, but they are still pretty **************** good cars and I have seen a few with over 400k that still drive pretty good.

Re: 1998-2002 V6 Accord had problems - Toronto Star Used Wheels Column

I have 41,000 miles on my 2003 Accord (next generation after this one) and I had the brake rotors cut once under warranty because they warped, and they're now feeling like they are warped again under hard stops, but I haven't bothered to do anything about it, because I don't do a lot of hard stops. I got a new set of rotors and ceramic pads for it at a silent auction that I'll just have installed when I get around to it.

Other than that, and an XM antenna that was never connected from the factory (I had one of the first Accords built in 2004, which was the first year for factory XM radios), I have not had any warranty issues or otherwise with the car in 2.5 years.

Agreed. I think American car companies get a lot of bad press about problems that some Japanese cars don't. Also another example is the Acura TL's, especially the higher powered 2002-2003 Type-S's. Judging from what owners have been saying, there are some of them in the shop more than my Ford, Volkswagen, Subaru, and Nissan combined! And that is just getting new transmissions!

Either way, the TL is a VERY nice car and I wouldn't mind owning one. Just proving the point that just about every car ever produced has some sort of a problem area.
