Exclamation Server Busy in 2008

I've noticed that about half the time I get blocked with "Server is too busy at the moment, try again later" messages lately. Sometimes I can't even get through even after waiting. I know this is prone to happen at large events like the NAIAS coverage--but that hasn't begun yet.

So what is going on? Is traffic really that much greater right now? Is everyone experiencing this (I have seen some complaints elsewhere in unrelated threads)? Is it something else, like a downed server? Anyway, I hope GMI is aware of the issue and if not, that's what this thread is for. Best of luck with the fix guys.

Re: Server Busy in 2008

Its been discussed before. Its taking the fun out of GMI. Searches hardly ever work anymore. A solution always seems to be in the works. I'm going to start looking for another source for NAIAS news - unless there is a new server announcement soon. I expect GMI to be paralyzed then considering I only get on right now 50% of the time I click on GMI.

Re: Server Busy in 2008

Its because we have people using up precious bandwith to post about how some girl dumped them, or pictures of their dogs, etc. We need to limit the size of the non-car related discusions, And how about limiting non-members. This web site used to be amazing with 30 second waits for searching, a members list in every thread, etc....Now its, almost balless.

Re: Server Busy in 2008

The easiest thing to do would be to limit guest access to 250 users until we get a new server.

The guests (who many I assume are just reading what they could get from other news sources) are the ones slowing the ship down.

At some point GMi has to make a trade-off, piss off the guests or piss off the people who post.

Re: Server Busy in 2008

The reason it went down yesterday was because the Camaro interior was released. Branden (site owner) is about to install a new server to resolve these issues. Hopefully it will be finished before NAIAS but it hasn't been promised. Wasting bandwidth on threads like these are not helping though.....Mods, please close!

I believe it is MORE then that.
When I can't get in I notice the ratio of Guests to Membership online.
It is 4-1 or even 5-1.
Last night I could not get in unless I 'Banged' at it for 10 minutes.
I noticed then there were well over 500 guests and about 100 members.

This is why I suggested to limit where Guests can go at high volume times.
Or even not let them in at all unless they register.

It is sucking the fun out of it here at GMi. That I do agree.

Re: Server Busy in 2008

A new server is coming, it's already been leased earlier this week! We will make the announcement soon, but NAIAS should -NOT- be a problem.

Still you should limit the amount of guests, that way we can get the goodies back as well (30 second search waiting, member's list, etc...) and your server would probably last longer.

We should be able to get the search, and other features back. Limiting guests limits traffic to the site, something that we aren't all that willing to do.

True...*I* didn't think of that. That means income from the advertisements.

Good Point!

Also, GMI is for people to get access to GM Inside News. It is not a by-admission club - the more people view the site and make it their news source, the better for GMI in the long run.

Congratulations to all the Staff on rapid growth and new server!

I hope someone is doing some database maintenance - perhaps update a few indexes.
