Recognizing good posters

There are over 40,000 members. Of the hundreds of posts that are made in any given day, some that are so great--be they knowledgeable, humorous, gracious, or intriguing--yet they get lost in the noise.

Many sites have a system wherein a good post gets promoted or reputation points are given. These then give the poster recognition for their contributions to making the site better and get that post more views, which also helps the site overall (you want your best material seen to attract more members, which attracts more advertisers and attracts more attention from other sites).

This site already has a system where a thread can be rated, why not expand that to individual posts? Of course, for posts I would suggest only allow positive feedback. Allowing negative feedback can be used vindictively.

So, why not institute that here? I don't see a downside. We need to lift up those that make a positive contribution to this site. It will only make this place better.

Re: Recognizing good posters

I will start, in that case.

I frequently disagree with Buick61, but I always look forward to reading what he has to say.

He makes me think, and that is the greatest gift of all.

Cheers, Buick.

Re: Recognizing good posters

It's something that we thought about doing several years ago, but ultimately decided against it. We felt the system would probably not be used in a very diplomatic manner and would cause more problems than good.

I'm not even entirely sure that the newest vBulletin has the capability in it. Nonetheless, its not something we are particularly interested in right now. We are extremely grateful for the many positive contributors on the board and really don't see a need to have popularity contests in order to point them out. Most of our positive contributors are well noted in threads in which they constructively add to or post excellent news onto the site so GMI can thrive for everyone's sake.

Re: Recognizing good posters

I can't see how reputation points would affect anything other than the ego of the poster.

It doesn't work out that well, you're going to have to take my word for it. You would be surprised how fast grown men cry about lack of "popularity points"

Re: Recognizing good posters

I have resisted posting on this thread a while, and I agree with NSAP, as one can already see, some are trying to get themselves liked more by others members. Kinds of funny.
If you like someones post, you can always PM them.

The fun begins when you don't like them . . .

That's very nice of you Simon, thank you.

I have to say I also enjoy hearing from wescoent as well.
