How to prevent those annoying pop-ups???

When viewing a thread, I will constantly get these annoying pop-ups when the cursor scrolls over a highlightable area (such as for a Subaru Outback) and the pop-up type ad shows up in the middle of the screen.

This 'feature' really takes away from enjoying the site. Anyway to disable it?

Re: How to prevent those annoying pop-ups???

On other forums I am on it is on by default but in the User CP there is a box you can check to turn it off.... a while a go I looked for the box to turn it off but couldn't find it... guessing keeping it locked on generates more money for the owner of the forum... oh well, as long as I don't have to pay to use the forum I don't care, it's annoying and would rather be able to turn it off, but whatever.

Re: How to prevent those annoying pop-ups???

I can understand why the need to advertise. But I'm on a GM site, I thought, and the ads I typically get pop-ups on are for Subaru, Ford, Toyota, etc...everything non-GM. Even if they're paying, why are they advertising their stuff? Just seems a little illogical to me.

I don't mind looking at some of the competition's stuff, mind you, I'd rather have the option to block all the pop-ups off, block just the non-GM pop-ups, or if leaving them on, make sure the cursor has to remain over the item for 3 seconds before firing off the pop-up. Half the time, I don't even know where I got the initial link from!

Can't wait for the premium membership to eliminate such things.

Re: How to prevent those annoying pop-ups???

Smart Links (green links you roll over) happen randomly on popular items, in this case various vehicles

Banner ads on the bottom of the page, and link ads at the top of the page are generated from text in the given page, for example, the ad at the bottom of this page right now is:

The multilink ads underneath the "trailvoy.com" banner are all pop-up related... Such ads really depends on the word content of the given page...

For example, a thread about a Toyota Tundra would likely have Tundra link and banner ads... A thread about Windows would have Windows link and banner ads... etc

But can't we at least get a 3 second grace on them? I'll bet it's less than .003 of a second...

Guess I'm preaching to the choir...was hoping there would be something to help alleviate the annoyance even a little bit...

Re: How to prevent those annoying pop-ups???

These ads have been here for over a year now. Since GMI does not have a huge sponsor base of a site like LS1Tech or CorvetteForum, we must rely on things like Adsense and Intellitext.

People want fast servers, spy pictures, prizes for design contests, and more...well that takes $$$.

However, Google does allow you to specify which ads you don't want served up on your site.

I can't go through and exclude any car company not relating to GM...Google has a limit on how accepting they are on exclusions. Also, I would imagine most of the userbase here is not gonna see a Tundra google add...and go buy one. I figure if Toyota wants to spend their money trying to advertise here...when it would be much more effective other places...so be it.

Think of it this way guys. Every time we see a tundra ad on here, we can point and laugh. It makes everyone happy.

This site has pop-up ads??

EDIT: O, the article ones. I thought you meant just the standard pop-ups.

Yes, I guess they're the ones from the articles. Somehow it picks up on Ford, underlines it out of the article, hyperlinks it and when you drag your mouse over it for a nanosecond (as you scan by to actually click on something else), a popup ad shows up for a Ford Flex or something.

Those ones...

:P

I understand the desire to advertise and the need to. I am not disputing that. I'm not even talking about the normal 'billboard' style ads showing on the site. I'm referring to the hyperlink popups in the articles. I really don't even mind they are there, it's just they're so sensitive that if you pass over them they give you the popup that is more an annoyance than a convenience.

If they cannot be gotten rid of or there is no option to an individual user to display them or not, can the sensitivity for the ad to actually be shown be modified to something more reasonable than a nanosecond?
