Front page images are too big

The "GMI Rumor: GM Cutting Another Division?" graphic is too big for my cheap-ass monitor here at work. I have to scroll to the right to see the News Ticker.

Any chance it could be cut down some? This is the second time this has happened in recent months, and it fraks up the site until the pic/news item gets pushed off the page.

Re: Front page images are too big

I have no problem with that.

Higher your resolution if you can, that will solve your problem.

What resolution are you running at work?
Perhaps your boss should buy you a bigger screen. Or maybe, you should do WORK from work, and check out GMI at home. :P

Yup...easy fix.
He is probably running 800x600 or somewhere around there.

Try 1080x768....or higher.

Or, add water, it will get bigger eventually. Keep it by the window though!

I tried that on 'myself' and Mrs Dood said it shrunk even more so.

But of course. After 25 years of marriage there is very little you can hide.

Pics on Main Page are Too Large

Just my unsolicited thought:

The pictures on the main page are too large.

Here's why I believe this to be true. I have 4 PCs in this house, and even on my wide-screen LCD laptop, I have to scroll horizontally to see the entire page width on the main page. Even on an old 19" monitor with an 1152 x 864 resolution, the main page must be scrolled horizontally.

Internet conventions typically accept a scrolling up or down to view content, but left-to-right is typically unexpected.

This seemed to begin when the pictures for the main page were sized to 800 pixels wide. Keep in mind that many elderly GMI readers may have total screen resolutions set to 800x600 in order to view text.

Readability aside, this could be a concern for our valued advertisers whose banner ads aren't even visible unless the readers scroll completely to one side but the site stats show that the page was delivered.

Has GMI established a set of guidelines for graphics? For example, I see that LeftLaneNews uses 300 pixel wide graphics for its main page, which provides much easier navigating and viewing of site content. Superhonda.com appears to keep their main page graphics under 500 pixels wide. Same for fordforum.com.

Even without concerns for the ease in viewing, the GMI main page graphics are fairly large, 70-80k compared with 20-30k for the 450-500 pixel images of other sites. This consumes hosting bandwidth/costs needlessly.

I just think GMI needs to keep its main page graphics at 450-500 pixels wide to ensure that most readers can view the site without horizontal scrolling and to ensure that advertiser content is viewable.

Re: Front page images are too big

I completely agree with the originator of this thread 1G6 ... the pics are too large on the main page, and honestly, it makes the site look a bit silly.

Personal preferences aside, I try to state my case in this thread:
http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...o-large-68373/

How do our advertisers feel about paying for ads that are not even being displayed on many readers screens due to the width of these pages?

Quickly compare with fordforums.com, superhonda.com, hybridforums.org, or any of our sister sites listed at the bottom of these pages. You'll see how out of place the extra-large graphics are on GMI's main page.

Also, it's a waste of hosting bandwidth and expense. 800 pixel-wide graphics on the main page are simply too wide.

Re: Pics on Main Page are Too Large

I agree, just add a link to a larger or hi res picture for those that want to see more detail.
